Dexmedetomidine is a selective α-adrenoceptor agonist and appears to disinhibit endogenous sleep-promoting pathways, as well as to attenuate noradrenergic excitation. Recent evidence suggests that dexmedetomidine might also directly inhibit hyperpolarization-activated cyclic-nucleotide gated (HCN) channels.
