This study focuses on the use of three isostructural NO donor ligands, specifically known to form complexes with copper ions, to chelate Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. The corresponding Cu(II) complexes feature a dinuclear copper core mimicking the active site of natural superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzymes while also creating a coordination environment favorable for catalase (CAT) activity, being thus appealing as catalytic antioxidant systems. Given the critical role of copper dysregulation in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD), these complexes may help mitigate the harmful effects of free Cu(II) ions: the goal is to transform copper's reactive oxygen species (ROS)-generating properties into beneficial ROS-scavenging action.

Methods: Fifteen (n=15) human donor corneas and 11 (n=11) porcine corneas were evaluated for the following parameters: endothelial cell density (ECD) and mortality, percentage of hexagonal cells (HEX%), coefficient of cellular area variation (CV%) and corneal transparency at Day 0 and after 14±1 days of storage in Corneal Chamber medium at 2-8°C. Then, the same parameters were assessed after rinsing of corneas in PSS-L for 1 min at room temperature.
Purpose: An ideal dye for intraocular use should effectively stain the target tissue while being easy to apply and remove. Additionally, it should not have any adverse effects resulting from prolonged contact with the retinal tissue. Recently, concerns have been raised about the safety of some vital dyes during surgical procedures as they may cross the internal limiting membrane and deposit on the retina.

The different anatomical compartments of the eye are highly subjected to reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation due to internal factors, such as metabolic high oxygen consumption, as well as environmental factors, including UV light. An antioxidant defense system is endowed in the eye tissues to regulate ROS quantity and activity. When this homeostatic system is overwhelmed, oxidative stress occurs, causing cellular damage, chronic inflammation, and tissue degeneration.

Many molecules and enzymes with reducing and antioxidant potential are present in different parts of the eye. Some of these, such as glutathione, N-acetylcysteine, α-lipoic acid, coenzyme Q10, and enzymatic antioxidants, are endogenously produced by the body.

A loss of their physiological activity, with reduced ability to recognize their receptors, is suspected to be associated with oxidative stress conditions. These are related to excessive presence of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, as well as of reactive lipoxidation byproducts.

Compounds including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), 1-perfluorooctane (1H-PFO), 2-tridecafluoro-2-methylpentane, 1,2-octafluorocyclopentane, and 2,3-decafluoropentane were analyzed by F NMR before and after extraction using an aqueous solution and tested by both the direct contact and liquid extract tests in L929, BALB 3T3, and ARPE-12 cells. The concentration that reduced in vitro cell viability by 30%, the cytotoxicity concentration threshold (CC), was determined for each compound.

Contributing to the browning of plant and fruit tissues and to the hyperpigmentation of the skin, leading to melasma or age spots, the research of possible tyrosinase inhibitors has attracted much interest in agri-food, cosmetic, and medicinal industries. In this study, we analyzed the capability of antamanide, a mushroom bioactive cyclic decapeptide, and some of its glycine derivatives, compared to that of pseudostellarin A, a known tyrosinase inhibitor, to hinder tyrosinase activity by using a spectrophotometric method.

Insoluble tau aggregates were observed to be organized in paired helical filaments (PHFs) and straight filaments (SFs). Recently, two small sequences (306-311 and 275-280) in the microtubule-binding region (MTBR), named PHF6 and PHF6*, respectively, were found to be essential for tau aggregation.

Recently we demonstrated that the prevailing mechanism of this denaturation involves the generation of free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this work, we analyzed the effect of buffering agents commonly used in spectroscopic measurements, including MOPS (3-(N-morpholino) propanesulfonic acid), HEPES (4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazineethanesulfonic acid), TRIS-HCl (tris-hydroxymethil aminomethane hydrochloride), and phosphate, on the efficiency of protein denaturation caused by exposure to UV radiation.

In particular, peptides represent good candidates for targeting G-quadruplex structures, since they are easily tailored to enhance their functionality.

Understanding the mechanisms that govern protein photo-stability is essential for its control enabling enhancement or reduction. Currently, two major mechanisms for protein denaturation induced by UV irradiation are available: one generated by the local heating of water molecules bound to the proteins and the other by the formation of reactive free radicals.

The effects of some selected polyphenols, including procyanidins B1 and B2, tannic acid, quercetin, and rutin, as well as those of a total white wine procyanidin extract on the conformational properties of the major wine protein VVTL1 ( Thaumatin-Like-1) were investigated by Synchrotron Radiation Circular Dichroism (SRCD). Results showed that VVTL1 interacts with polyphenols as demonstrated by the changes in the secondary (far-UV) and tertiary (near-UV) structures, which were differently affected by different polyphenols.

The aggregation and insolubilization of these proteins lead to progressive lens opacification until cataract onset. Although this is a well-known disease, the mechanism of eye lens protein aggregation is not well understood; however, one of the recognized causes of proteins modification is related to the exposure to UV light.

The lens water soluble protein pool in mammals is composed of α-, β-, and γ-crystallins, the latter being involved in calcium homeostasis and having structural importance, the first playing a crucial role in preventing protein aggregation and the consequent lens obfuscation, which leads to the clinical outcome of cataract. Among different factors, oxidative stress, free radicals, and reactive oxygen species (ROSs) generated by the exposure to UV light are widely recognized to cause cataract formation.

While proteins are present in wine at low concentration, and are largely associated with undesirable haze formation in white wines, certain types or fractions make direct and indirect contributions to sensory quality and physical stability. The proteins found in wine represent a small subclass of the total pool of grape proteins that remain soluble in the non-physiological conditions of the wine matrix which is characterised by the presence of alcohol, high acidity, and relatively high levels of phenolic compounds. Although initially stable in these conditions, during storage of white and rosé wines proteins undergo changes leading to haze formation which is considered one of the most relevant non-microbiological defects, and which makes the wine commercially unacceptable.
