Aims And Background: Prostate cancer is the most common malignant tumor in men. Serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA), Gleason score and clinical range at the time of diagnosis are important factors to predict prognosis and outcome after therapy but additional accurate and reliable biomarkers are still wanted. So far, few biomarkers of prostate cancer have been successfully implemented and are being used in clinical practice.

Serum crosslinked-N-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (NTx) has prognostic implications for patients with initial prostate carcinoma (PCa): a pilot study.

Background: NTx is a type I collagen metabolite previously shown to be increased in patients with bone metastasis. We evaluate NTx potential prognostic role in PCa at diagnosis, when most of the patients have no overt bone involvement.

Methods: Men with histologic diagnosis of PCa were included at diagnosis.

Pancreatic elastase-1 is a proteolytic enzyme exclusively produced in the pancreas, is stable when passing through the bowel, and its determination is associated with chronic pancreatitis. The clinical diagnosis of pancreatitis is based on anamnesis, physical examination, radiological, sonographic, endoscopic, and laboratory findings. Nowadays, there is a test for the determination of fecal elastase-1, by enzymatic reaction (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, ELISA), which specifically determines human elastase-1, promoting the pancreatic function evaluation.
