Article Synopsis
  • This study examines how cardiovascular responses (like heart rate and blood pressure) can help predict the outcomes for children with acute acquired brain injury (ABI) who are admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU).
  • The research included 72 children, where significant associations were found between conditions like tachycardia and abnormal blood pressure levels and their likelihood of mortality.
  • The findings suggest that the Poincaré SD1/SD2 ratio may be a useful tool for predicting mortality in these patients, indicating the need for larger studies to confirm these results.

Article Synopsis
  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common inherited heart disease, with a recent study examining the link between first-degree atrioventricular block (FDAVB) and cardiovascular outcomes in patients.
  • In a study involving 97 patients, FDAVB was present in 14.4% of cases, and various cardiovascular events were tracked over an average follow-up period of about 4.3 years, but no significant association between FDAVB and these outcomes was found.
  • The study did discover that patients with FDAVB were generally older and had distinct echocardiographic measures, particularly a higher E/e' ratio, indicating a potential area for further research on FDAVB as a progn

Background: The family members of intensive care unit (ICU) patients play a crucial role in modern ICUs. These individuals are predisposed to the development of post-intensive care syndrome in family members (PICS-F), a syndrome experienced by family members of ICU patients in response to critical illness and characterised by new or worsening psychological symptoms. This study sought to evaluate the levels of anxiety and depression exhibited by the family members of patients hospitalised in the ICU.

Background: Currently, the measurement of glomerular filtration rate is very complex and costly, so its daily evaluation is performed using endogenous markers, of which creatinine is the most frequently used. It allows the estimation of glomerular filtration rate by means of its clearance or by formulas based on its serum and urine concentration. Augmented renal clearance (ARC) is frequent among critically ill patients and is defined as creatinine clearance (CrCl) > 130 ml/min/1.
