There has been an exponential increase in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States, causing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to declare an epidemic. Current evidence demonstrates that extragenital STIs of the oropharynx and rectum are often asymptomatic and may not be associated with concurrent positive urogenital infections. As a result, these infections are often missed in primary care.
