In 2019, Stromboli volcano experienced one of the most violent eruptive crises in the last hundred years. Two paroxysmal explosions interrupted the 'normal' mild explosive activity during the tourist season. Here we integrate visual and field observations, textural and chemical data of eruptive products, and numerical simulations to analyze the eruptive patterns leading to the paroxysmal explosions.

Article Synopsis
  • Mid-intensity basaltic explosive eruptions lead to deposits featuring various types of juvenile clasts, which exhibit significant variability in their properties due to magma storage, ascent, and modifications during eruption.
  • If clasts fall back into the crater before being re-ejected, they can undergo thermal and chemical changes, classifying them as 'recycled' or cognate lithics related to the eruption.
  • Identifying these recycled clasts is crucial for accurately interpreting eruption dynamics and assessing potential hazards associated with volcanic activity.
