Introduction: Depressive Disorders are on the rise worldwide. This is also the case in Latin America (LatAm). Treatment-Resistant Depressive Disorder (TRD) poses additional burden to patients with depression.

Valproate is among the most prescribed drugs for bipolar disorder; however, 87% of patients do not report full long-term treatment response (LTTR) to this medication. One of valproate's suggested mechanisms of action involves the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), expressed in the brain areas regulating emotions, such as the prefrontal cortex. Nonetheless, data about the role of BDNF in LTTR and its implications in the structure of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) is scarce.

Article Synopsis
  • Sunlight helps our skin make vitamin D through UVB radiation, but some places don't get enough UVB in winter, which can affect brain health.
  • A study looked at 6,972 people with bipolar I disorder from over 70 countries to see if not getting enough UVB was related to when they first had symptoms.
  • The results suggested that people in areas with less UVB tended to show symptoms of bipolar disorder about 1.66 years earlier, but more research is needed to understand the role of vitamin D and UVB in this condition.

No large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of psychosis have been conducted in Mexico or Latin America to date. Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in particular have been found to be highly heritable and genetically influenced. However, understanding of the biological basis of psychosis in Latin American populations is limited as previous genomic studies have almost exclusively relied on participants of Northern European ancestry.

Objective: Circadian rhythm disruption is commonly observed in bipolar disorder (BD). Daylight is the most powerful signal to entrain the human circadian clock system. This exploratory study investigated if solar insolation at the onset location was associated with the polarity of the first episode of BD I.

Background: Evidence suggests that schizophrenia (SCZ), schizoaffective disorder (SAD) and bipolar disorder (BPD) share genetic risk variants. ZNF804A gene has been associated with these disorders in different populations. GWAS and candidate gene studies have reported association between the rs1344706 A allele with SCZ, SAD and BPD in European and Asian populations.

Introduction: Functioning in Bipolar Disorder (BD) is affected in a substantial proportion of patients. The impact of demographic, clinical, cognitive, and genetic factors on functioning has been shown individually; however, as a complex phenomenon, a global approach to identify the most relevant as well as possible interactions is needed.

Methods: 102 patients with type I BD in euthymia were invited for evaluation of demographic, clinical, and cognitive characteristics as well as genotype for Val66Met polymorphism of BDNF gene to determine those associated with poor functioning according to the FAST scale cut-off score.

Introduction: Early-stage predictors of illness course are needed in bipolar disorder (BD). Differences among patients with a first depressive versus maniac/hypomanic episode have been stated, although in most studies, memory bias and time from onset to start of specialized treatment might interfere. The aim was to compare the first 10 years of illness course according to polarity at onset.

Valproate compositions are frequently used to treat bipolar disorder (BD); however, 87% of patients do not report full response in the long-term. There is scarce information about the clinical features and brain structural characteristics of long-term treatment response (LTTR) to this medication. In this study, we aim to evaluate the clinical characteristics and prefrontal cortical thickness (CT) of LTTR to valproate in BD.

Introduction: Identifying affective temperaments could be useful both for understanding the normal behavioral variations in the general population and to establish if there is a clinical predisposition to certain disorders. Five affective temperaments have been proposed: depressive, cyclothymic, hyperthymic, irritable and anxious. Original instrument for measuring them (TEMPS-A) is a 110-item scale but many short versions in different languages have been validated.

Purpose: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a condition associated with structural alterations in the prefrontal cortex (PFC); some genetic variants and mood stabilizer medications like lithium or valproate are associated with these changes. is a gene involved in BD pathology and brain function; carriers of the A allele of rs1006737 are reported to have increased risk for BD and increased cortical thickness (CT) in the PFC compared to non-carriers. Lithium is also associated with increased CT in the PFC of BD subjects compared to the ones on valproate.

to compare testosterone levels between female depressed patients and female bipolar patients. Sixty-one female patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) ( = 23) or bipolar disorder (BD) ( = 38) between 18 and 45 years old were included in the study. Participants were evaluated during a depressive or manic episode with the Hamilton depression rating scale (HDRS) or Young mania rating scale (YMRS), respectively.

Background: Occupational functioning is severely impaired in patients with bipolar disorder (BD). Work motivation (WM), defined as the psychological processes that determine the direction, intensity, and persistence of action within the work, is an essential component of work-related functioning.

Aim: To assess whether WM is affected in patients with BD and which clinical and sociodemographic factors are related to low WM.

Objective: Earthquakes may lead to a reaction to severe stress and adjustment disorders (RSSAD). On September 7, 19, and 23, 2017, Mexico was struck by many severe earthquakes. The aim of this study was to examine whether there was an increase in the number of consultations and RSSAD in a psychiatric emergency department in Mexico City after these earthquakes.

Objective: Pharmacogenetic studies have identified genetic variants associated with fluoxetine response in patients with major depression disorder (MDD). The serotonin transporter gene is the principal site of action of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Previous studies analyzing SLC6A4 gene variants are inconsistent and differ among populations.

Bipolar Disorder (BD) is a serious and frequent mental health condition that is sometimes fatal. Several longitudinal studies have found an important correlation between cognition and functionality in BD. Despite the known importance of cognitive symptoms in BD, evaluation of cognitive deficits is not routinely done in clinical settings, as assessment is time-consuming and requires neuropsychological testing.

Background: The method used to collect, store, and analyze data can affect the quality of data obtained. Many studies have shown the advantages of electronic systems over paper. Numerous tools are available for this purpose; however, they tend to be implemented only in high-budget protocols as they tend to be expensive.

Objectives: The prevalence of obesity has dramatically increased in many countries and it is particularly high in patients with bipolar disorder (BD). A region in the first intron of the fat mass- and obesity-associated (FTO) gene, encompassing markers rs9939973, rs8050136, and rs9939609, has been consistently associated with obesity and body mass index (BMI) in different populations. We sought to determine whether FTO is associated with BMI and/or obesity in patients with BD.

Introduction: AFECTS is a novel psychometric instrument that provides an integrated framework based on affective temperamental traits and their trait dimensions. It has the potential to be used in clinical and research fields to study psychopathology and mental health. It is now necessary to field-test this instrument with diverse populations and psychopathological entities.

Objective: Second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) are among the first-line treatments for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, but have a tendency to generate metabolic disturbances. These features resemble a metabolic syndrome for which a central autonomic imbalance has been proposed that may originate from the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nuclei. In a clinical trial, we hypothesized that melatonin, a hormone that regulates the suprachiasmatic nucleus, could attenuate SGA-induced adverse metabolic effects.
