The efficiency of a staged photocatalytic reactor prototype was evaluated on a semi-pilot scale with the removal of acetaminophen, for which anatase particles were synthesized by Sol-Gel and impregnated on rectangular plates of clay. X-ray diffraction and Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence patterns show that the final composite is made up of AlO (14 %), SiO (41 %), CaO (3 %) TiO (34 %), and FeO (7 %). The impregnation method favors the dispersion of Anatase on the surface of the adsorbent.

This review provides a current opinion on the most recent works that have been published toward the application of electrochemical advance oxidation processes (EAOPs) for the degradation of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in water streams. Advances in the application of anodic oxidation (AO)- and electro-Fenton (EF)-based processes are reported, including operational conditions, electrode performance, and removal. Although AO- and EF-based processes can easily reach 100% removal of PPCPs, mineralization is desirable to avoid the generation of potential toxic byproducts.

The carbamazepine (CBZ) abatement is herein evaluated using catalytic ozonation at different NiO concentrations as catalyst: 100, 300, and 500 mg L, revealing its total destruction after 5 min of reaction either by conventional or catalytic ozonation. The NiO incorporation in the reactor does not increase the destruction rate, but the catalyst presence enhances the partial mineralization of the contaminant by conversion into oxalic and formic acids and the removal of total organic carbon (TOC) associated with the formation of oxidant species such as hydroxyl radical. Evidence for this behavior is the accumulation rate of the above acids which rise proportionally to the NiO concentration.

This work evaluated the inhibition effect of low molecular weight alcohol (ethanol) on naproxen (NAP) degradation by conventional and catalytic ozonation. The reaction system considered the ethanol as complementary organic matter in water. The conventional ozonation and in the presence of nickel oxide (O-NiO) achieved 98% NAP degradation during the first 15 min of reaction despite the presence of ethanol.

The advanced oxidation of paracetamol (PAM) promoted by TiO(2)/UV system in aqueous medium was investigated. Monitoring this reaction by HPLC and TOC, it was demonstrated that while oxidation of paracetamol is quite efficient under these conditions, its mineralization is not complete. HPLC indicated the formation of hydroquinone, benzoquinone, p-aminophenol and p-nitrophenol in the reaction mixtures.
