Background: The advantages of insulin degludec 100 U/mL (IDeg100) in the treatment of diabetes mellitus (DM) include consistent release, predictable glucose-lowering effect, and minimal day-to-day variability.

Hypothesis/objectives: To describe the use of IDeg100 in dogs with DM, level of diabetic control and adverse effects.

Animals: Thirty-three client-owned dogs with DM.

Phase transitions occurring in nonequilibrium conditions can evolve through high-energy intermediate states inaccessible via equilibrium adiabatic conditions. Because of the subtle nature of such hidden phases, their direct observation is extremely challenging and requires simultaneous visualization of matter at subpicoseconds and subpicometer scales. Here, we show that a magnetite crystal in the vicinity of its metal-to-insulator transition evolves through different hidden states when controlled via energy-tuned ultrashort laser pulses.

Intracellular α-ketoglutarate is an indispensable substrate for the Jumonji family of histone demethylases (JHDMs) mediating most of the histone demethylation reactions. Since α-ketoglutarate is an intermediate of the tricarboxylic acid cycle and a product of transamination, its availability is governed by the metabolism of several amino acids. Here, we show that asparagine starvation suppresses global histone demethylation.

Sciatic and gluteal lymph nodes are present in multiple veterinary species, but these lymph nodes are explicitly stated to be absent in dogs. However, structures compatible with lymph nodes have been identified in the appropriate locations in some canine patients undergoing abdominopelvic CT, and the presence of such lymph nodes may have prognostic and therapeutic ramifications in canine patients with abdominopelvic disease. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and characteristics of sciatic and gluteal lymph nodes in dogs on CT.

Background: The sequencing of the genome of the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum revealed an unusual expansion of the miRNA machinery, with two argonaute-1, two dicer-1 and four pasha gene copies. In this report, we have undertaken a deeper evolutionary analysis of the phylogenetic timing of these gene duplications and of the associated selective pressures by sequencing the two copies of ago-1 and dcr-1 in different aphid species of the subfamily Aphidinae. We have also carried out an analysis of the expression of both copies of ago-1 and dcr-1 by semi-quantitative PCR in different morphs of the pea aphid life cycle.

This article reviews the recent changes in the understanding of acute pancreatitis pathophysiology emphasizing results deriving from the more detailed comprehension of the local and systemic aspects of the inflammatory process. The authors briefly discuss those theories that have been influencing the basic philosophies of treatment efforts. The role of premature digestive enzyme activation as the principal determinant of the pathoetiology and mortality of this disease has been questioned lately, and the inflammatory explosion has been placed into the center of attention.

Using archival sources, the authors report on the debates and diverse perspectives of United Nations representatives responsible for formulating Article 25 (relating to health and medical care) and 27 (relating to science) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. These articles supply important normative guidelines for human rights and public health policy. The question of whether health-related rights should depend on state and/or private sponsorship was left open.

To evaluate whether conditions for adapted dose mafosfamide (mafo) purging vary with accumulating chemotherapy, we studied the sensitivity of bone marrow CFU-GM in a total of 30 patients at different stages of treatment. We determined the dose of 95% CFU-GM growth-inhibition by mafo (ID95) in 23 patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and 7 patients with lymphoid malignancies in first or second complete remission (CR). Sixteen AML patients were studied in early first CR prior to intensive consolidation with high-dose cytarabine (HDAC) and had a median ID95 of 130 (range 90-190) micrograms mafo/ml; the median ID95 in 3 of 7 AML-CR1 and 4 of 7 AML-CR2 patients who previously had HDAC therapy was 75 (range 55-110) micrograms/ml whereas a control group of 7 patients with lymphoid malignancies in CR1 showed a median ID95 of 100 (range 80-160) micrograms/ml.

The authors review results of 20 years of cryosurgery for benign prostatic hypertrophy based on 992 cases treated by this method. In particular, they compare the 500 more recent cases of cryocauterisation with the new minimally invasive techniques proposed:balloon dilatation, prostatic stent, thermotherapy, hyperthermia, medical treatment with a 5-alpha-reductase. A study of the cost of these treatments with similar performances places cryosurgery in a good position.

The treatment of urinary incontinence due to unstable bladder remains difficult. In the case of failure of medical or physiotherapeutic treatments, clam enterocystoplasty represents a major and important therapeutic possibility. The operation consists of frontal section of the bladder to form a bivalve followed by interposition, between the two valves, of a detubed ileal graft in order to increase the functional vesical capacity and to interrupt the transmission of detrusor contraction waves from one valve to the other.

Since November 1st, 1988, an outpatient clinic has been set up in our department of Urology. Patients come to the clinic on the morning of the procedure and leave in the evening after a few hours of monitoring. Eligibility for outpatient surgery is determined using strict social, surgical and medical criteria.

The authors report the case of a patient with acute alithiasic cholecystitis associated with viral B hepatitis revealing periarteritis nodosa. Histopathological results showed signs of focal arteritis in the gallbladder and liver. Because of the negativity of the viral DNA in serum and the lack of histopathological necrosis in hepatic specimen, the patient was treated by steroid therapy only with a rapid regression of signs of vasculitis and the disappearance of the hepatitis markers.

This retrospective study was undertaken to evaluate the incidence of an abnormal pancreaticobiliary ductal union (long common duct) in biliary tract carcinoma. Of 86 patients presenting with such a cancer, 67 had a pre- or intra-operative radiologic examination. An abnormal pancreaticobiliary ductal union was found in only one 60 year old woman having stones associated with invasive gallbladder carcinoma.

This retrospective study considers the diagnostic reliability of 97 cyto-biopsies performed with a fine needle and guided by ultrasonography in 92 patients with one or several suspicious liver lesions. The results of the cyto-biopsy were compared with the final diagnosis obtained by histological examination or by the evolution. In 65 confirmed malignant tumors, fine needle biopsy was concordant in 54 cases.

This retrospective study was undertaken to evaluate the diagnostic usefulness of 97 sonographically guided fine needle aspiration biopsy cytologies in 92 patients with one or more hepatic lesions suspicious of malignancy. Results of the fine needle aspiration biopsy were then compared with the definitive results obtained by histologic examination, or with the subsequent course of the patient. A final diagnosis of malignancy was established in 65 cases, of which fine needle aspiration biopsy cytology revealed a concordant diagnosis in 54 cases.

The authors report a case of hemo-lymphangioma from the body and the tail of the pancreas. Through a review of the literature, the histological, histogenetical and clinical features of this disease are recalled and the diagnostic and therapeutic modalities are considered. These are benign tumors and their treatment must be surgical and radical.

Twenty-one patients whose condition required mechanical ventilation with nasogastric intubation were investigated for oesophagitis before the 3rd day and on the 15th day of treatment, including endoscopy and biopsy. Lesions of oesophagitis were detected in 14 cases during the initial examination and in 19 cases on the second endoscopy. The course of the lesions varied from one patient to another and appeared to be unrelated to the course of the primary disease.
