Contemporary meta-analyses have generally demonstrated a positive effect of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO) supplementation on exercise performance. However, despite these claims, there is limited data on contrasting individualized and standardized of NaHCO ingestion prior to exercise to further enhance performance outcomes. To determine whether NaHCO ingestion timing impacts 2,000-m rowing time-trial (TT) performance in elite-level rowers (Senior National team including Olympic/World Championships level) adhering to their own individualized pre-race strategies (e.

Exercise can induce numerous health benefits that can reduce the risk of chronic diseases and all-cause mortality, yet a significant percentage of the population do not meet minimal physical activity guidelines. Several recent studies have shown that passive heating can induce numerous health benefits, many of which are comparable with exercise, such as improvements to cardiorespiratory fitness, vascular health, glycemic control, and chronic low-grade inflammation. As such, passive heating is emerging as a promising therapy for populations who cannot perform sustained exercise or display poor exercise adherence.

While the role of forestry in mitigating climate change is increasingly subject to political commitment, other areas, such as water protection, may be at risk. In this study, we ask whether surface waters are sufficiently safeguarded in relation to the 2015 launch of a series of measures to intensify forest management for mitigation of climate change in Norway. First, we assess how impacts on water are accounted for in existing regulations for sustainable forestry.

Background: For high-volume assays, optimizing throughput reduces test cost and turn-around time. One approach for liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) assays is sample multiplexing, wherein the analyte of interest is derivatized in different specimens with reagents of different molecular weight (differential mass tagging). Specimens can then be combined and simultaneously analyzed within a single injection to improve throughput.

For over a decade RNA interference (RNAi) has been an important molecular tool for functional genomics studies in parasitic flatworms. Despite this, our understanding of RNAi dynamics in many flatworm parasites, such as the temperate liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica), remains rudimentary. The ability to maintain developing juvenile fluke in vitro provides the opportunity to perform functional studies during development of the key pathogenic life stage.

Article Synopsis
  • * Consensus interpretations (positive or negative) were established when at least three out of the four assays agreed, showing very high agreement rates among the assays (96.7% to 100% for negatives and 94.3% to 100% for positives).
  • * Although some false positives were identified, they were infrequent, confirming that the assays are reliable for detecting SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies.

Oesophageal cancer is the 6th most common cause of cancer related death worldwide. The current standard of care for oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC) focuses on neoadjuvant therapy with chemoradiation or chemotherapy, however the 5-year survival rates remain at < 20%. To improve treatment outcomes it is critical to further investigate OAC tumour biology, metabolic phenotype and their metabolic adaptation to different oxygen tensions.

Article Synopsis
  • Barrett's esophagus (BE) is an inflammatory condition that can lead to esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) and is linked to caspase-1 signaling, which is important for inflammatory responses.
  • This study investigated how caspase-1 expression changes during the progression from normal esophageal tissue to BE and eventually to EAC using three models: a human cell line, a mouse model, and patient tissue samples.
  • The results showed that caspase-1 activity is significantly higher in BE tissues, and inhibiting caspase-1 reduced the secretion of inflammatory markers, suggesting that targeting this protein could help manage inflammation and disease progression in BE patients.

Background: Prostate radiotherapy (RT) is a first-line option for newly diagnosed men with low-burden metastatic prostate cancer. The current criterion to define this clinical state is based on manual bone metastasis counts, but enumeration of bone metastases is limited by interobserver variations, and it does not account for metastasis volume or lesional coalescence. The automated bone scan index (aBSI) is a quantitative method of evaluating bone metastatic burden in a standardised and reproducible manner.
