State Leadership Academies to reduce cigarette smoking among people with behavioral health conditions in the United States.

Objective: Smoking is concentrated in behavioral health populations in the United States, calling for efforts to increase access to cessation services.

Methods: Between 2010 and 2023, the Smoking Cessation Leadership Center (SCLC) implemented state Leadership Academies-a facilitated summit of public health leaders and community champions charged with developing an action plan to address smoking in their state. Using a multi-methods approach, we evaluated state Leadership Academies using the RE-AIM framework.

Development of a novel test of splenic function for use in a clinical diagnostic laboratory.

The spleen is prone to both physical damage and functional impairment, which can be difficult to detect before catastrophic complications occur. Currently available tests of splenic function are laborious, user-dependent and unreliable, so there is an unmet need for a reliable test offered routinely in diagnostic laboratories. In this study, we have assessed a simple flow cytometry-based method measuring high mannose glycans (HMGs) on erythrocytes, which has previously been proposed as a potential test of splenic function.

Objective: To describe outcomes of patients receiving care in a new, outpatient, virtual, home-based acute care model called Safer@Home.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This retrospective cohort analysis, conducted from September 1, 2022, through August 31, 2023, included 2466 patients treated at a safety net hospital in Los Angeles County for 10 core illnesses and 24 other acute illnesses for which patients are commonly hospitalized.

The effects of moderate prenatal alcohol exposure on performance in object and spatial discrimination tasks by adult male rats.

Exposure to alcohol during pregnancy produces Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, which in its most severe form is characterized by physical dysmorphology and neurobehavioral alterations. Moderate prenatal alcohol exposure (mPAE) is known to produce deficits in discrimination of spatial locations in adulthood. However, the impact of mPAE on higher-order sensory representations, such as discrimination of perceptually similar stimuli, is currently unknown.

Humans adapt their locomotion seamlessly in response to changes in the body or the environment. It is unclear how such adaptation improves performance measures like energy consumption or symmetry while avoiding falling. Here, we model locomotor adaptation as interactions between a stabilizing controller that reacts quickly to perturbations and a reinforcement learner that gradually improves the controller's performance through local exploration and memory.

Molecular, cellular, and organismal alterations are important descriptors of toxic effects, but our ability to extrapolate and predict ecological risks is limited by the availability of studies that link measurable end points to adverse population relevant outcomes such as cohort survival and growth. In this study, we used laboratory gene expression and behavior data from two populations of Atlantic killifish [one reference site (SCOKF) and one PCB-contaminated site (NBHKF)] to inform individual-based models simulating cohort growth and survival from embryonic exposures to environmentally relevant concentrations of neurotoxicants. A cheap and straightforward method for the selective isolation of histidine-derived natural products using nickel(II) phosphate.

Nickel-based resins have long been used in biochemical studies for the purification of His-tagged proteins, but their potential in the isolation of histidine-derived small molecules has not been investigated to date. Many agriculturally-important mycotoxins incorporate histidine residues, as do natural products from both plants and bacteria. Here, a highly-selective solid-phase extraction method is described for the purification of histidine-derived natural products using the insoluble nickel salt Ni(PO).

A comprehensive analysis of SOX17 expression by immunohistochemistry in human epithelial tumors, with an emphasis on gynecologic tumors.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate SOX17, a transcription factor from the Sry high-mobility group-related box superfamily, as a diagnostic marker to determine site of origin using both whole-tissue sections and tissue microarrays (TMAs).

Methods: SOX17 immunohistochemistry was performed on gynecologic and nongynecologic tissues (N = 1004) using whole-tissue sections and both internally constructed and commercially available TMAs. SOX17 nuclear reactivity was scored as positive or negative on the whole-tissue sections and using the semiquantitative H score method on TMAs.
