Child impeding packs are difficult for children to open so protect them from unintended access to hazardous contents inside the pack. However, if packs are difficult for adults to open, in normal usage scenarios, this may result in a higher occurrence of packs being left open. This research explores differences in ease of usage and closure compliance between two types of child impeding packs of liquid laundry detergent capsules.

The spermine-based hydroxypyridonate octadentate chelator 3,4,3-LI(1,2-HOPO) was investigated for its ability to act as an antenna that sensitizes the emission of Sm(III), Eu(III), and Tb(III) in the Visible range (Φ(tot) = 0.2-7%) and the emission of Pr(III), Nd(III), Sm(III), and Yb(III) in the Near Infra-Red range, with decay times varying from 1.78 μs to 805 μs at room temperature.

Although widely used in bioassays, the spectrofluorimetric method described here uses the antenna effect as a tool to probe the thermodynamic parameters of ligands that sensitize lanthanide luminescence. The Eu(3+) coordination chemistry, solution thermodynamic stability, and photophysical properties of the spermine-based hydroxypyridonate octadentate chelator 3,4,3-LI(1,2-HOPO) are reported. The complex [Eu(III)(3,4,3-LI(1,2-HOPO))](-) luminesces with a long lifetime (805 mus) and a quantum yield of 7.
