Molecular Imaging is entering the most fruitful, exciting period in its history with many new agents under development, and several reaching the clinic in recent years. While it is unusual for just one laboratory to take an agent from initial discovery through to full clinical approval the steps along the way are important to understand for all interested participants even if one is not involved in the entire process. Here, we provide an overview of these processes beginning at discovery and preclinical validation of a new molecular imaging agent and using as an exemplar a low molecular weight disease-specific targeted positron emission tomography (PET) agent.

Occasionally, the length of the gastric conduit is insufficient to allow delivery into the neck after laparoscopic mobilization and requires laparotomy to complete the procedure. We hypothesize that the need for laparotomy will correlate with the measurement of mediastinal height (distance from thoracic vertebrae T1-T12) on chest CT.

Asymptomatic LECs are managed conservatively, but symptomatic LECS have traditionally been managed with surgical resection. We report the first case of symptomatic infected LEC of the pancreas successfully managed with EUS guided endoscopic drainage with lumen-apposing metal stent.

The increase in CDI incidence has been particularly apparent among surgical patients. Therefore, prevention of CDI and optimization of management in the surgical patient are paramount.

Vertebrate and invertebrate epidermal cells ensheath peripheral arbors of somatosensory neurons, including nociceptors, yet the developmental origins and functional roles of this ensheathment are largely unknown. Here, we describe an evolutionarily conserved morphogenetic mechanism for epidermal ensheathment of somatosensory neurites.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in PDAC patients at a single institution. All patients with resected PDAC and staging CT and EUS between 2003 and 2014 were included and sub-divided into "upfront resected" and "neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC)" groups.
Purpose: In this study we developed and tested an iron oxide nanoparticle conjugated with DTPA and Trastuzumab, which can efficiently be radiolabeled with 99m-Tc and Ga-68, generating a nanoradiopharmaceutical agent to be used for SPECT and PET imaging.
Methods: The production of iron oxide nanoparticle conjugated with DTPA and Trastuzumab was made using phosphorylethanolamine (PEA) surface modification. Both radiolabeling process was made by the direct radiolabeling of the nanoparticles.
Purpose: 18F-FDG PET/CT is widely used to evaluate indeterminate pulmonary nodules (IPNs). False positive results occur, especially from active granulomatous nodules. A PET-based imaging agent with superior specificity to 18F-FDG for IPNs, is badly needed, especially in areas of endemic granulomatous nodules.

Many institutions dedicate significant time and resources to patient handoffs despite the fact that the ideal method is relatively unknown. We sought to compare the effect of a rigorous formal handoff approach to a minimized but focused handoff process on patient outcomes.

However, their individual utility has not been compared.
Methods: A consecutive cohort of PD patients from 2013 to 2015 were identified from a prospectively collected institutional database.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an under-recognized but increasingly important manifestation of the metabolic syndrome. Bariatric surgery, both through direct weight loss and more indirect effects on insulin resistance and improvements in inflammatory proteins, can have a profound effect on NAFLD, resulting in improvement or resolution of even high-grade liver disease.

After specification, parapineal neurons migrate unilaterally away from the rest of the pineal complex whereas rods, cones and projection neurons are non-migratory. The transcription factor Tbx2b is important for both the correct number and migration of parapineal neurons.

Methods: (68)Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT and (111)In-pentetreotide scans were obtained for 78 of 97 consecutively enrolled patients with known or suspected pulmonary or gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. Safety and toxicity were measured by comparing vital signs, serum chemistry values, or acquisition-related medical complications before and after (68)Ga-DOTATATE injection.
In the last two decades there have been dramatic changes in the epidemiology of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI), with increases in incidence and severity of disease in many countries worldwide. The incidence of CDI has also increased in surgical patients. Optimization of management of C difficile, has therefore become increasingly urgent.

This paper presents data on the changing patterns of clinical use of radiopharmaceuticals and documents the range of activity administered to adult patients undergoing diagnostic nuclear medicine procedures in the U.S.

Obesity-related liver pathologies including nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) have become a leading cause for liver transplant. However, risk factors for developing severe liver disease in the morbidly obese remain unknown.

In cases of fulminant infection, surgery is a viable therapeutic option but associated with high mortality. We sought to examine factors associated with mortality in a large sample of patients with severe CDI that underwent surgery.

This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between confidence and competency of medical students undergoing basic surgical skills training.
Methods: Medical students completed confidence surveys before and after participating in an introductory workshop across 2 samples.

Aim: To examine if fulminant Clostridium difficile infections (CDI) resulting in colectomy was associated with a prior appendectomy and whether any association affected the severity of the disease.
Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed on patients who underwent colectomy for CDI between 2001 and 2011. The appendectomy rate was calculated based on the absence of an appendix on the surgical pathology report.
Unlabelled: Measured human dosimetry of the (68)Ga-labeled synthetic somatostatin analog (68)Ga-DOTATATE has not been reported in the peer-reviewed literature. (68)Ga-DOTATATE is an investigational PET/CT imaging agent that binds with high affinity to somatostatin receptor subtype 2, found on many human cancers, most classically neuroendocrine tumors but also others. Reporting of measured dosimetry of (68)Ga-DOTATATE could be useful for investigations for diagnosis, staging, and restaging of somatostatin receptor-expressing tumors.

The molecular mechanisms that control formation of such asymmetries are beginning to be understood. View Article and Find Full Text PDFA central problem in developmental biology is to deduce the origin of the myriad cell types present in vertebrates as they arise from undifferentiated precursors. Researchers have employed various methods of lineage labeling, such as DiI labeling and pressure injection of traceable enzymes to ascertain cell fate at later stages of development in model systems. The first fate maps in zebrafish (Danio rerio) were assembled by iontophoretic injection of fluorescent dyes, such as rhodamine dextran, into single cells in discrete regions of the embryo and tracing the labeled cell's fate over time.
