To restore an area of temperate rocky-reef degraded by sedimentation, scour, and burial, a large quarry rock reef, the Palos Verdes Restoration Reef (PVR), was built with a heterogenous design including high relief elements intended to increase fish biomass productivity and support a diverse reef community. The replicated design features provide a unique opportunity to study the effects of reef design on fish habitat use patterns. To determine how submodule scale habitat features are associated with variation in the assemblage structure of eleven focal fish species on the PVR we conducted diver-operated stereo-video surveys on all 18 PVR modules 9-13 months after construction.

Introduction: In B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL), testing at diagnosis for BCR/ABL1 gene rearrangements is mandatory for prognostic stratification and treatment decisions. Several diagnostic methods have been proposed using flow cytometry to identify BCR/ABL1(+) B-ALL.
Methods: We evaluated expression of the myeloid antigen CD66c by flow cytometry in B-ALL.
Reproduction was investigated in relation to lunar and annual cycles in a population of yellow tang Zebrasoma flavescens, a popular aquarium species commercially harvested in Hawaii. Lunar periodicity was determined to be an inherent characteristic of reproduction; peaks in mean daily egg production, female gonado-somatic index (I(G)) and the fraction of females with eggs were observed at the full moon of each sampled month. An increase in the fraction of late-stage vitellogenic oocytes within the ovaries was also observed at the full moon.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjectives: In a bid to combat methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) more efficiently in our department, we performed a study to 1) clarify the MRSA carriage rate in patients hospitalized in the department; 2) evaluate the rate of MRSA acquisition during hospitalization; 3) describe the MRSA carrier profile; 4) study the morbidity and mortality associated with MRSA.
Patients And Methods: We conducted a three-month prospective study in all patients hospitalized for more than 24hours in the dermatology department of the Saint-Louis Hospital. Nasal swab cultures were performed on the day of admission, once a week thereafter and on the day of discharge.
Mastocytosis is an acquired orphan disease characterized by the abnormal accumulation of mast cells responsible for organ failure and systemic symptoms. Cytoreductive drugs have been shown to be effective, but have rarely resulted in complete or long-term remission. We report two patients with advanced systemic mastocytosis (SM) who were treated successfully with thalidomide, given at the maximal tolerated dosage.
