Phagocytosis by macrophages is a highly polarized process to destroy large target cells. Binding to particles induces extensive cortical actin-generated forces that drive the formation of elaborate pseudopods around the target particle. Postinternalization, the resultant phagosome is driven toward the cell interior on microtubules (MTs) by cytoplasmic dynein.
