We present two cases of women who suffered from neurotrophic keratopathy (one of them had undergone penetrating keratoplasty) which had led to corneal thinning. Tachosil was used as an adjuvant treatment after topical medication by itself failed in both cases. To our knowledge, there are no reported cases of the use of Tachosil in corneal grafts.

Purpose: To assess the 13-month effectiveness and safety of aflibercept in naïve patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nvAMD) in a real-life clinical setting.

Methods: Thirty-two treatment-naïve patients with nvAMD participated in a prospective two-center study. Patients received intravitreal injections of aflibercept (Eylea®), a loading dose of three monthly injections (2 mg/0.

Purpose: To compare subfoveal choroidal thickness (GCSF) in patients with diabetic macular oedema (DMO) and healthy subjects using swept source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT).

Method: Cross-sectional study including 50 eyes of 36 patients with DMO, and 47 eyes of 34 patients as a control group. GCSF was measured in both groups, analysing between the eyes with DMO according to the type of oedema (predominantly cystic or diffuse).

Case Report: A 20 year-old healthy patient consulted due to acute loss vision in his left eye. A fundus examination showed a macular alteration compatible with unifocal helioid choroiditis, characterized by being an atypical inflammatory yellow-white, round, single lesion of approximately an optic disc in diameter. The etiology study detected low Antitoxoplasma gondii Ig G (immunoglobulin) titers.

Purpose: An analysis is made of a serious late complication (opacification) of different models of hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lenses (IOLs).

Methods: Seven lenses were explanted from seven patients treated for cataracts with phacoemulsification and implantation of different types of hydrophilic acrylic IOLs (five SC60B-OUV from MDR, one Aquasense from OII, and one H60M Hydroview lens from Bausch & Lomb) who developed important vision impairment in the late postoperative period (1 to 3 years) due to lens opacification. The explanted lenses were subjected to exhaustive study involving photographic analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate the occurrence and impact of glistenings in the Artiflex iris-claw phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) implanted in patients.
  • Four out of twenty pIOLs showed varying grades of glistenings, but these did not negatively affect visual acuity or patient satisfaction.
  • The authors concluded that a more extensive study is needed to explore the long-term effects of glistenings on visual function and their underlying causes.

Purpose: To evaluate the Ahmed valve for decrease elevated pressure associated with black diaphragm lenses for aniridia.

Methods: Drainage devices are useful to obtain good control of intraocular pressure in patients with aniridia and the authors often use them because of the poor results of medical therapy or filtering surgery. However, when the elevated intraocular pressure is associated with black diaphragm lenses for aniridia, most authors decide to carry out a filtering technique.

Purpose: To assess the feasibility of using phakic intraocular lenses (PIOL) to treat high myopia, and evaluate the incidence of cataract, comparing three different lens types.

Methods: From 1989 to 2002, we implanted three different phakic intraocular lenses (PIOL) in 343 eyes of 232 patients; 231 eyes recieved an Ophtec (Worst-Fechner model, iris-claw), 89 an Adatomed (silicone posterior chamber), and 23 a Staar (posterior chamber, models V2, V3, V4). Average follow-up was 96.
