Many medical schools are transitioning to pass/fail grading from tiered grading systems which have been associated with increased competition, grade inflation, decreased wellness, and grading disparities along racial/ethnic lines. This retrospective cohort study followed two cohorts of students from one medical school for four years. Methods: Multiphase interventions designed to increase access to care were instituted at the student behavioral health clinic. These interventions were based on the findings of online wellness surveys distributed to the Medical College of Wisconsin during the 2016-2017 school year.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe photo-Fenton activity of graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) has been widely studied, nevertheless, its Fenton-like catalytic behavior in the dark has not yet been demonstrated. In the present work, it is shown that oxygenated g-CN obtained at different temperatures (500-600 °C) can degrade indigo carmine with hydrogen peroxide in the dark by a reaction similar to a conventional Fenton's reaction. Based on an extensive characterization of g-CN, we conclude that Fenton-like activity is directly related to the oxygenated functional groups on g-CN structure, mainly by -OH functional groups.

In this work, the babassu coconut shells (epicarp and endocarp) were used for the achievement of products such as cellulose, cellulose acetate and cellulose-silica composite, which were chemically and structurally characterized by solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, among other techniques. A simple and straightforward method using microwave-assisted reactions is presented for the functionalization of graphene oxide with aromatic and non-aromatic amines, notedly dibenzylamine (DBA), -phenylenediamine (PPD), diisopropylamine (DPA) and piperidine (PA). The as-synthesized amine-functionalized graphene oxide materials (amine-GO) were characterized using spectroscopic techniques including XRD, FTIR, C NMR, XPS, TEM for imaging and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). In presynaptic nerve terminals, complexin regulates spontaneous "mini" neurotransmitter release and activates Ca-triggered synchronized neurotransmitter release. We studied the role of the C-terminal domain of mammalian complexin in these processes using single-particle optical imaging and electrophysiology. The C-terminal domain is important for regulating spontaneous release in neuronal cultures and suppressing Ca-independent fusion in vitro, but it is not essential for evoked release in neuronal cultures and in vitro.
