Glaucoma is a widespread ophthalmological disease, with a high impact and frequent visual morbidity. While the physiopathology of the two types of primary glaucoma (open angle and angle closure) has been studied, there seems to be little relationship between the two. In this study, we gather clinical and preclinical data to support the idea that the two primary glaucomas are "mirrored" in terms of morphological parameters and disease physiopathology.

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is widely used in the characterization of liver tumors; however, the evaluation of perfusion patterns using CEUS has a subjective character. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of an automated method based on CEUS for classifying liver lesions and to compare its performance with that of two experienced clinicians. The system used for automatic classification is based on artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms.

Background: Standard colonoscopy fails to visualize the entire colon mucosa and consequently a significant amount of polyps are still being missed. New device, such as EndoCuff, have been developed to improve mucosal visualisation, hence the quality in colonoscopy. The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic yield of EndoCuff-assisted colonoscopy in comparison with standard colonoscopy by taking into consideration several quality indicators.

Ultrasound is a fundamental tool used in all medical specialties, including ophthalmology. Nowadays, ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM), a method with higher resolution, allows the investigation of in vivo details of the anterior segment of the eye at microscopic resolution. The examination is especially useful in patients with secondary glaucoma that involves a lens component such as phacomorphic glaucoma and occult phacomorphic glaucoma (OPG).

The proximal esophagus is rarely examined, and its inspection is often inadequate. Optical chromoendoscopy techniques such as narrow band imaging improve the detection rate of inlet patches in the proximal esophagus, a region in which their prevalence is likely underestimated. Various studies have reported correlations between these esophageal marks with different issues such as Barrett's esophagus, but these findings remain controversial.

Despite significant advances in imaging techniques, the incidence of colorectal cancer has been increasing in recent years, with many cases still being diagnosed in advanced stages. Early detection and accurate staging remain the main factors that lead to a decrease in the cost and invasiveness of the curative techniques, significantly improving the outcome. However, the diagnosis of pedunculated early colorectal malignancy remains a current challenge.

Gastric cancer (GC) is an important health problem despite the advances in surgery and chemotherapy and although the incidence is decreasing, GC is still considered the second most common cause of deceases produced by cancer. Survival rates in gastric cancer are low, mainly because most patients are often diagnosed in late stages. The current interest in the diagnostic of GC is the detection of early gastric cancer.

Arterial stiffness and vascular calcifications are independent predictors of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in the chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 5D population. According to the guidelines, patients on renal replacement therapy represent a very high cardiovascular risk class. We report the case of a 67-year-old hypertensive male patient, known with CKD stage 5D on hemodialysis (three times per week), secondary bone mineral disease, admitted for progressive right leg pain.

Conventional white light endoscopy is far from being an ideal tool to detect, characterize, and confirm the nature of colorectal lesions in order to indicate targeted biopsies or polyp resections only when necessary. Minimally invasive imaging techniques have gradually emerged to reveal previously unseen abnormalities to the operator during endoscopic examination. In this respect, technology and applications of narrow band imaging (NBI) are rapidly evolving.

Background And Aims: Confocal laser endomicroscopy enables real-time in vivo microscopy during endoscopy and can predict relapse in patients with inflammatory bowel disease in remission. However, little is known about how endomicroscopic features change with time. The aim of this longitudinal study was to correlate colonic confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) in ulcerative colitis with histopathology and macroscopic appearance before and after intensification of medical treatment.

Aim: To evaluate neoangiogenesis in patients with colon cancer by two fluorescently labeled antibodies on fresh biopsy samples imaged with confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE).

Methods: CLE is an imaging technique for gastrointestinal endoscopy providing in vivo microscopy at subcellular resolution. An important question in validating tumor angiogenesis is what proportion of the tumor vascular network is represented by pre-existing parent tissue vessels and newly formed vessels.

The stress a patient is subjected to during dialysis treatment can be reduced by using a synergetic approach by the medical team. The integration into therapy of the positive psychical resources such as: active positive coping mechanisms, individual or family mental resilience, improvement of the image and self-esteem, better tolerance to frustration can represent an important part in the improvement of the patient's quality of life, determination of a positive approach of the situations both for him and close friends and relatives.

Background: Patients with stage 5 chronic kidney disease (CKD) begin chronic hemodialysis with variable diuresis levels correlated to a comparable low glomerular filtration rate. Residual diuresis influences long-term evolution of the hemodialyzed patient, modifying the prognosis even if optimal Kt/ V is achieved.

Aim Of The Study: The present study emphasizes the main determining factors of diuresis in a cohort of stage 5 CKD subjects at the beginning of hemodialysis.

Thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger'€™s disease) represents an inflammatory disease of limbs'€™ small arteries and veins causing vascular thrombosis, and partial or total obstruction. It affects mostly male gender aged 40 years old. The peculiarity of our case is underlined by presenting a 62 years, chronic tobacco user and not compliant female patient known with thromb oangiitisobliterans for almost 15 years.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) limitation as renal replacement therapy is mostly due to peritonitis and complications. Formation and persistence of intra-abdominal loculations is often under-diagnosed. Encapsulated peritoneal sclerosis (EPS) is a life-threatening complication, but malnutrition, recurrent peritonitis and early membrane failure are insidious enemies that need to be emphasized.

Unlabelled: Metabolic acidosis slowly develops during renal impairment natural evolution towards ESRD and represents an important contributing factor of CKD progression. Although, several clinical and experimental trials reported the major impact of metabolic acidosis on CKD evolution, the pathophysiology mechanism remains a matter of debate. Furthermore, international guidelines do not impose a specific treatment scheme for metabolic acidosis in CKD patients, and metabolic acidosis is not fully compensated once hemodialysis starts.

Unlabelled: Nowadays, nephrologists are confronted with an increasing number of elderly patients diagnosed with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in need of dialysis. The benefits of renal replacement therapy are uncertain in this group of patients. Most studies show that the quality of life and survival of elderly dialyzed patients are worse than in younger patients because of multiple comorbidities.

Unlabelled: The prevalence of treated patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) has considerably increased in the last decade mainly in the elderly age groups. The type of optimal mode of dialysis therapy in elderly is difficult to establish and most studies comparing hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis in elderly failed to demonstrate the superiority of one therapy versus the other. The present article uses Charlson Co morbidity Index to compare evolution of an elderly population in HD versus PD.
