Freshwater ecosystems are crucial for global biodiversity through supporting plant and animal species and providing essential resources. These ecosystems are under significant threat, particularly in island environments such as Madagascar. Our study focuses on the Amboaboa River basin, home to the rare and endemic fish species Rheocles derhami, last recorded in 2013.

Article Synopsis
  • Effective biomonitoring strategies are essential to protect vulnerable aquatic habitats from human-induced ecosystem changes, particularly in marine environments affected by climate change.
  • This study focuses on the Oslo fjord, utilizing eDNA-based monitoring over a year to analyze aquatic biodiversity and identify 63 fish species, revealing significant migratory patterns and seasonal dynamics.
  • eDNA metabarcoding proves to be a cost-effective and powerful method for assessing fish communities, offering valuable data for conservation efforts and management strategies in fluctuating marine ecosystems.

Haemulon steindachneri (Jordan and Gilbert) (Haemulidae), popularly known as "cocoroca-de-boca-larga", "latin-grunt" or "latin-burro", represents a species complex found on the Atlantic western coast and on the Pacific eastern coast, condition confirmed recently by molecular phylogenies. In the present study, DNA barcoding analysis recognizes two distinct clusters; the first includes Brazil and Caribbean, and the second is composed of Pacific specimens, with genetic distance of 7.4%, differentiated by 35 base pairs.
