Article Synopsis
  • This study explores how changing water content affects the self-assembly of polystyrene-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS--PEO) in tetrahydrofuran/water mixtures using small-angle X-ray scattering.
  • In pure tetrahydrofuran, PS--PEO chains create fractal aggregates, but adding water leads to the formation of gelled networks due to mesophase separation.
  • The presence of water is essential for creating these gel networks; replacing it with hydrochloric acid lowers the viscosity, and increased water content results in a mix of micelles and fractal aggregates.

Bowl-like nanostructures have attracted significant scientific and technological interest due to their favorable characteristics, such as high specific surface area, interconnected porous channels, and conductivity. However, tailored synthesis of bowl-like nanostructures with well-defined and uniform morphology is still a challenge. Herein, we report a versatile microemulsion assembly approach to prepare bowl-like nanostructures of three different materials: polymer, carbon, and platinum.
