Effectiveness and safety of cefovecin sodium, an extended-spectrum injectable cephalosporin, in the treatment of cats with abscesses and infected wounds.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of cefovecin sodium in the treatment of cats with naturally occurring skin infections (abscesses and infected wounds).

Design: Multicenter (26 sites), randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial.

Animals: Client-owned cats of any breed with naturally occurring skin infections with associated clinical signs and confirmatory bacteriologic culture results.

Efficacy and safety of cefovecin in treating bacterial folliculitis, abscesses, or infected wounds in dogs.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of administration of cefovecin, compared with cefadroxil, for treatment of naturally occurring secondary superficial pyoderma, abscesses, and infected wounds in dogs.

Design: Multicenter, randomized, positive-controlled clinical trial.

Animals: 235 client-owned dogs.

Relationship between inflammatory cytology of canine seminal fluid and significant aerobic bacterial, anaerobic bacterial or mycoplasma cultures of canine seminal fluid: 95 cases (1987-2000).

Seminal fluid was collected by manual ejaculation from 95 dogs. Quantitative aerobic bacterial, qualitative anaerobic bacterial and mycoplasma cultures were performed on the seminal fluid, and their association with presence of inflammatory cells present in the pellet formed after centrifugation of the fluid was investigated. There was a clinically meaningful aerobic bacterial growth in 28.

Pyogranulomatous meningoencephalitis associated with dematiaceous fungal (Cladophialophora bantiana) infection in a domestic cat.

A 6-month-old, castrated male domestic cat with progressive neurological signs of 2-3 weeks duration was necropsied. Macroscopic findings were restricted to the brain and included irregularly shaped, well-delineated but unencapsulated areas of intense black pigmentation involving the rostral portion of both cerebral hemispheres. Microscopically, numerous brown, oblong, segmented branching hyphae and conidial-like structures and extensive pyogranulomatous inflammation were identified throughout the cerebral lesion and in adjacent blood vessels.
