The development of functional bionanocomposites for active food packaging is of current interest to replace non-biodegradable plastic coatings. In the present work, we report the synthesis of an alginate-based nanocomposite filled with modified halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) to develop coatings with improved barrier properties for food packaging. Firstly, HNTs were chemically modified by the introduction of carbon dots units (CDs) onto their external surface (HNTs-CDs) obtaining a nanomaterial where CDs are uniformly present onto the tubes as verified by morphological investigations, with good UV absorption and antioxidant properties.

Background: A prediction model that estimates mortality at admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) is of potential benefit to both patients and society. Logistic regression models like Simplified Acute Physiology Score 3 (SAPS 3) and APACHE are the traditional ICU mortality prediction models. High rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms have been found among patients with more severe COVID-19-related symptoms, and hospitalization is generally recognized as a risk factor for developing PTSD. Furthermore, other personality characteristics may increase the risk of developing post-traumatic stress symptoms following a COVID-19 infection. Background: The identification of risk factors for adverse outcomes and prolonged intensive care unit (ICU) stay in COVID-19 patients is essential for prognostication, determining treatment intensity, and resource allocation. Embolisation of a catheter fragment is a rare mechanical complication of long-term central venous access devices. From 1995 to 1999 we observed 10 cases: the cause of embolisation was the 'pinch-off syndrome' in half of the cases, and in 8 cases out of 10 the fragment had embolised in the pulmonary arterial vessels. Percutaneous transvenous retrieval was successful in all cases; it was performed mainly (8 cases out of ten) through the left transfemoral route, using a single-snare-loop device sometimes associated with a pig-tail catheter.

Background: The present paper describes a training method with objective evaluation to enhance video-assisted surgical skills in subfascial endoscopic perforator veins surgery (SEPS). Training was scheduled during a 2-day intensive course.

Methods: Hands-on exercises were performed (i) on a simulator to assess whether specific training exercises were helpful in attainment of skills; (ii) on a known animal model that uses the swine abdominal wall and which allows practice in endoscopic dissection and perforator veins (PV) using appropriate instrumentation in an environment that is a reasonable surrogate for the human calf; and (iii) assisting a senior surgeon performing SEPS.

A case is reported of a 54-year-old female patient undergoing the resection of a pancreatic carcinoma with intraoperative radiation therapy (10 Gy) on the tumor bed and subsequent external beam radiotherapy (50 Gy). After surgery the patient presented chronic diarrhea resistant to oral pancreatic enzymes. Twenty-five months postoperatively, mesenteric vein thrombosis was diagnosed after an episode of melena and was treated with conservative therapy.
