Epileptic seizures are seen as a result of changing excitability balance depending on the deterioration in synaptic plasticity in the brain. Neuroplastin, and its related molecules which are known to play a role in synaptic plasticity, neurotransmitter activities that provide balance of excitability and, different neurological diseases, have not been studied before in epilepsy. In this study, a total of 34 Sprague-Dawley male and female rats, 2 months old, weighing 250-300 g were used.

Oral mucositis (OM) refers to erythematous and ulcerative lesions of the oral mucosa. This pathology can occur by various causes. Cancer therapy is one of the well-known causes of OM such as chemotherapy and/or with radiation therapy.

Effects of astaxanthin on antioxidant parameters in ARPE-19 cells on oxidative stress model.

Aim: To observe the protective effect of astaxanthin (AST) against hydroquinone (HQ) mediated cell death in the apoptotic cascade and evaluate intracellular Ca release, caspase-3, and -9 activation, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in ARPE-19 cells.

Methods: We cultured ARPE-19 cells in special mediums and performed MTT tests to determine protective effect of AST, before exposing the cells to HQ in an incubator. We analyzed intracellular Ca release experiments, mitochondrial membrane depolarization, glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and ROS experiments, and apoptosis assay.

Collaborative active learning: bioimpedance and anthropometry in higher education.

Research in the health sciences devotes much attention to overweight and obesity and, consequently, to body composition. In recent years, traditional body measures have been questioned as efficient variables in health sciences due to the fact that they cannot give information about body fat mass. Our aim is to teach how to analyze body composition through anthropometry and bioelectrical impedance analysis to our "Physiology of Vegetative and Reproductive Functions" students, who are studying for their degree in Biology.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the histopathological and apoptotic changes occurring in the rat ipsilateral and contralateral testes, after experimental spermatic cord torsion, and to explore and the role of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) cleavage in testicular torsion-detorsion injury. A total of 37 Wistar albino rats were subjected to 720° unilateral spermatic cord torsion for 1, 2 and 4 h, followed by 4-h reperfusion, or else to a sham operation (control group). Histology of the testicle was evaluated using haematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining and Johnsen's scoring system.

We investigated the effects of colchicine on oxidative stress and Ca²+ release in serum and polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMNs) of Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) patients with attack, remission and unremission periods. Eighteen FMF patients and six age-matched healthy subjects in four groups were used. The first group was a control.

We investigated effects of vitamin C and E (VCE) administration on desflurane-induced oxidative toxicity and element changes in the blood of operative patients under desflurane general anesthesia. Forty American Society of Anesthesiologists I or II Physical Status adult patients were scheduled for elective surgery. The patients were randomly divided into two groups.

Excessive administration of acetaminophen above the recommended daily dose range has some negative effects on the brain. We investigated the effects of different doses of acetaminophen on Ca(2+)-ATPase and the antioxidant redox system in rats.

Venlafaxine modulates depression-induced oxidative stress in brain and medulla of rat.

Venlafaxine is an approved antidepressant that is an inhibitor of both serotonin and norepinephrine transporters. Medical treatment with oral venlafaxine can be beneficial to depression due to reducing free radical production in the brain and medulla of depression-induced rats because oxidative stress may a play role in some depression. We investigated the effect of venlafaxine administration and experimental depression on lipid peroxidation and antioxidant levels in cortex brain, medulla and erythrocytes of rats.
