Objective: This retrospective multicenter study, centrally conducted and supported by the Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism of Turkey, aimed to evaluate the impact of free RET proto-oncogene testing in medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) patients. Surgical timing, adequacy of the treatment, and frequency of prophylactic thyroidectomy (PTx) in mutation carriers were also assessed.

Methods: Genetic testing for MTC and pheochromocytoma was conducted between July 2008 and January 2012 in 512 patients.

The patient with a history of bone pain and muscle weakness, was thought to have oncogenic osteomalacia as a result of biochemical investigations and directed to Nuclear Medicine Department for a whole-body bone scintigraphy and 111In-octreotide scintigraphy. There was no focal pathologic tracer uptake, but generalized marked increase in skeletal uptake on bone scintigraphy. Octreotide scintigraphy showed accumulation of octreotide in the region of the left lobe of the thyroid gland in the neck.

Internal jugular vein (IJV) thrombosis is an extremely rare vascular disease that is easily overlooked or misdiagnosed. It is usually secondary to intravenous drug abuse, prolonged central venous catheterization or deep head-neck infections or trauma. Associated malignancies, either known or occult, are also uncommon and not well documented in the etiology of IJV thrombosis.

Thyroid papillary carcinoma presenting as a pharyngeal mass is a rare clinical occurrence and has only been reported sporadically. We present here two patients who had papillary carcinoma metastasis of the thyroid gland to the parapharyngeal space. Each patient had a different clinical progress.
