Background: PIEZO1 has emerged as a mechanoreceptor linked with adipogenesis, adipose tissue (AT) inflammation and insulin resistance. We aimed to determine the impact of obesity and obesity-associated type 2 diabetes (T2D) as well as mechanical compression forces on the expression of PIEZO1 in visceral AT (VAT) and its relation with inflammation.

Methods: Blood and VAT samples were obtained from 100 volunteers.

Liver transplantation in colorectal metastases. Is there an indication for this procedure?

Almost 25 % of patients with colorectal cancer present metastases at the time of diagnosis and 50 % go on to develop metastases in the course of the disease. Surgical resection is the only curative treatment although only between 20 % and 30 % of patients present resectable lesions. Although liver transplantation is contraindicated in unresectable metastases of colorectal cancer, ever since the publication of the results of a pilot study there has been renewed interest in transplantation in these patients.

Introduction: Obesity contributes to ectopic fat deposition in non-adipose organs, including the pancreas. Pancreas steatosis associates with inflammation and β-cell dysfunction, contributing to the onset of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. An improvement of pancreatic steatosis and indices of insulin resistance is observed following bariatric surgery, but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown.

Methods/patients: From a prospective database, we retrospectively identified all patients with synchronous CLRMs who were treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and liver resection. Using univariate and multivariate analyses, we identified the variables associated with tumor recurrence.

In Spain, the reported incidence is 72 patients per 100,000 inhabitants per year.

Objective: Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is a major cause of difficult-to-treat epilepsy in children and young adults, and the diagnosis is currently based on microscopic review of surgical brain tissue using the International League Against Epilepsy classification scheme of 2011. We developed an iterative histopathological agreement trial with genetic testing to identify areas of diagnostic challenges in this widely used classification scheme.

Methods: Four web-based digital pathology trials were completed by 20 neuropathologists from 15 countries using a consecutive series of 196 surgical tissue blocks obtained from 22 epilepsy patients at a single center.
