Increasing diagnosis of thyroid papillary carcinoma follicular variant in south-east Anatolian region: comparison of characteristics of classical papillary and follicular variant thyroid cancers.

We aimed to compare ratios of thyroid cancers diagnosed in our regional reference hospital Pathology Center in Sanliurfa city located in southeast Anatolia, and evaluate the characteristics related with follicular variant papillary thyroid carcinoma (FVPTC). We re-evaluated the specimens of last 5 years thyroidectomies by same five pathologists, by same criteria and immunohistochemical evaluation. Chi-square test was used to compare characteristics of classical pure papillary thyroid carcinomas and FVPTC groups.

Effects of a combination of sitagliptin plus metformin vs metformin monotherapy on glycemic control, β-cell function and insulin resistance in type 2 diabetic patients.

Aims: To evaluate the impact on glycemic control, insulin resistance, and insulin secretion of sitagliptin+metformin compared to metformin in type 2 diabetic patients.

Methods: Patients were instructed to take metformin for 8 ± 2 months, then they were randomly assigned to sitaglipin 100 mg or placebo for 12 months. We evaluated at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months: body mass index (BMI), glycemic control, fasting plasma insulin (FPI), HOMA-IR, HOMA-β, fasting plasma proinsulin (FPPr), proinsulin/fasting plasma insulin ratio (Pr/FPI ratio), C-peptide, glucagon, adiponectin (ADN), and high sensitivity-C reactive protein (Hs-CRP).

The role of irbesartan in the treatment of patients with hypertension: a comprehensive and practical review.

Irbesartan is an orally active angiotensin II type 1 receptor antagonist (angiotensin receptor blocker [ARB]) whose pharmacological profile differs significantly from those of many other compounds of the same class. In particular, according to its pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profile, irbesartan has a high bioavailability, a long duration of action and a small potential for pharmacological interactions due to the nature of the enzymatic pathway involved in its metabolic process. Morbidity data with irbesartan have been mainly accumulated in patients with renal impairment where the drug has demonstrated the most remarkable evidence of efficacy among the ARBs class, regardless of the stage of the renal disease (from early to late) and the length of the observational period.

Antidiabetic properties of berberine: from cellular pharmacology to clinical effects.

Berberine is an alkaloid that is highly concentrated in the roots, rhizomes, and stem bark of various plants. It affects glucose metabolism, increasing insulin secretion, stimulating glycolysis, suppressing adipogenesis, inhibiting mitochondrial function, activating the 5' adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway, and increasing glycokinase activity. Predator fishes at the top of the aquatic food chain can accumulate large concentrations of metals and their consumption, consequently, makes a significant contribution, in particular, to mercury intake. The aim of this study was to determine mercury levels in fillets of two predatory species: pangasius (Pangasius hypophthalmus) from the Vietnam region of Megong and Chao Pharayai and cod (Gadus morhua) from the Baltic and North Sea, both being commercially important in the Italian market. A comparative analysis of these two imported fish species was carried out as a risk assessment for consumer safety.

Our research activities target the use of biological methods for the evaluation of environmental quality, with particular reference to saltwater/brackish water and sediment. The choice of biological indicators must be based on reliable scientific knowledge and, possibly, on the availability of standardized procedures. In this article, we present a standardized protocol that used the marine crustacean Artemia to evaluate the toxicity of chemicals and/or of marine environmental matrices.

Vildagliptin added to metformin on β-cell function after a euglycemic hyperinsulinemic and hyperglycemic clamp in type 2 diabetes patients.

Membrane microvesicle shedding is an active process and occurs in viable cells with no signs of apoptosis or necrosis. We report here that microvesicles shed by oligodendroglioma cells contain an 'aggrecanase' activity, cleaving aggrecan at sites previously identified as targets for adamalysin metalloproteinases with disintegrin and thrombospondin domains (ADAMTSs). Degradation was inhibited by EDTA, the metalloproteinase inhibitor GM6001 and by tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMP)-3, but not by TIMP-1 or TIMP-2.

Activity of isoflavones and berberine on vasomotor symptoms and lipid profile in menopausal women.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a food supplement combination based on isoflavones and berberine (ISB) in the treatment of menopausal symptoms and dyslipidaemia. Isoflavones are extracted from soy and absorbed in the body after being activated by lactobacillus. Berberine, extracted from the plant Berberis aristata, lowers plasma cholesterol and triglycerides (TG) by increasing low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors and reducing hepatic synthesis of TG.

Relationship between blood pressure, cholesterolemia and serum apolipoprotein B in a large population sample: the Brisighella Heart Study.

Objective: The objective is to evaluate the relationship between cholesterolemia, serum apolipoprotein B (apoB) level and blood pressure in a large sample of general population.

Methods: The Brisighella Heart Study (BHS) is a prospective, population-based longitudinal epidemiological investigation. For this study, we analysed the data sampled in the 2008 BHS population survey, excluding those participants treated with antihypertensive and/or lipid lowering drugs (N: 2473).

Toxicity evaluation of diethylene glycol and its combined effects with produced waters of off-shore gas platforms in the Adriatic Sea (Italy): bioassays with marine/estuarine species.

Diethylene glycol (DEG) is commonly used to dehydrate natural gas in off-shore extraction plants and to prevent formation of gas hydrates. It may be released into the sea accidentally or in discharged produced waters (PWs). PWs samples from off-shore gas platforms in the Adriatic Sea (Italy) have been used in this study.

Adipokines and sexual hormones associated with the components of the metabolic syndrome in pharmacologically untreated subjects: data from the brisighella heart study.

We evaluated the association of the sex hormone pattern and the serum level of the main adipokines to metabolic syndrome (MS) and its components in 199 pharmacologically untreated subjects. Men and women included in the age-class subgroups were matched for body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, heart rate, fasting plasma glucose, and plasma lipids. Men without MS had significantly lower leptin/adiponectin ratio than men with MS.

RNA-binding activity of the rat calmodulin-binding PEP-19 protein and of the long PEP-19 isoform.

Synthesis of H1˚ histone protein, in the developing rat brain, seems to be regulated mainly at the post-transcriptional level. Since regulation of RNA metabolism depends on a series of RNA-binding proteins, we have been searching for RNA-binding proteins involved in the post-transcriptional regulation of the H1˚ gene. We recently reported isolation, from a cDNA expression library, of an insert encoding a novel protein, the C-terminal half of which is identical to that of PEP-19, a brain-specific protein involved in calcium metabolism.

Blood pressure and metabolic effect of a combination of lercanidipine with different antihypertensive drugs in clinical practice.

The aim of this study is to assess the blood pressure (BP) and metabolic effects of lercanidipine when combined with other classes of first-line antihypertensive drugs in day-to-day clinical practice. For this study, we consecutively enrolled 162 patients with uncomplicated primary hypertension, who are partial responders to the treatment with lercanidipine over a period of 24 months. Patients were then allocated to the combination of lercanidipine (10-20 mg/day) with β-blockers, diuretics, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, and angiotensin-II receptor blockers according to compelling indications (if any) and/or suggestions of European Society of Hypertension-European Society of Cardiology (ESH-ESC) guidelines.

Biosurveillance where it happens: state and local capabilities and needs.

In recent years, improved biosurveillance has become a bipartisan national security priority. As has been pointed out by the National Biosurveillance Advisory Subcommittee and others, building a national biosurveillance enterprise requires having strong biosurveillance systems at the state and local levels, and additional policies are needed to strengthen their biosurveillance capabilities. Because of the foundational role that state and local health departments play in biosurveillance, we sought to determine to what extent state and local health departments have the right capabilities in place to provide the information needed to detect and manage an epidemic or public health emergency-both for state and local outbreak management and for reporting to federal agencies during national public health crises.

Microvesicles (MVs) shed from G26/24 oligodendroglioma cells were previously reported to cause a reproducible, dose-dependent, inhibitory effect on neurite outgrowth, and eventually neuronal apoptosis, when added to primary cultures of rat cortical neurons. These effects were reduced but not abolished by functional monoclonal antibodies against Fas-L. In order to investigate whether MVs contain other factors able to induce cell death, we tested them for TRAIL and found clear evidence of its presence in the vesicles.

Effects of 1-year orlistat treatment compared to placebo on insulin resistance parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes.
