As spontaneous renal artery dissection (SRAD) is a rare cause of abdominal pain, bilateral dissection is an extremely rare event. Only approximately two hundred cases of SRAD have been reported in the literature. The diagnosis is often delayed due to the rarity of the disease and non-specific clinical presentations such as flank pain, hypertension, fever, nausea, vomiting, and hematuria, which can be often misdiagnosed as a genito-urinary infection or gastrointestinal or bowel disease.

Article Synopsis
  • Pityriasis rosea (PR) is a skin condition that usually gets better on its own, often linked to reactivated human herpesviruses, causing mild rashes and itchiness.
  • Traditional treatment focuses on reassuring patients to rest, but severe cases may require medication, prompting a study comparing various treatments.
  • The analysis found that oral steroids and a combo with antihistamines were effective for itch relief, while acyclovir was the most effective for improving rash symptoms, making it the best option for more serious PR cases.

  • Lichen striatus (LS) is a self-resolving skin condition primarily affecting children, characterized by a linear pattern and mainly seen in females, with an average patient age of 3.8 years.
  • A review of 27 articles involving 440 patients suggests that LS may be linked to immune system dysregulation, where cytotoxic T-cells attack skin cells after losing immune tolerance.
  • It is mostly diagnosed clinically based on its unique characteristics, with a typical duration of about 9.5 months, and treatment is rarely needed, highlighting the benign nature of the condition while also pointing out the need for more research in this area.

The vaginal microbiota (VMB) plays a crucial role in women's health from puberty to menopause. Traditional studies have focused on the microorganisms present within the vaginal environment and their roles in disease onset. However, the dynamic relationship between the VMB and its host remains underexplored.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study assessed the knowledge and attitudes about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among healthcare workers at a hospital in Italy, revealing that many overestimate their understanding of the topic.
  • - A questionnaire completed by 140 healthcare workers showed that only one-third could correctly identify STIs and knew the transmission methods, despite most recognizing HIV and the effectiveness of condoms.
  • - The findings suggest a significant gap in STI education, indicating the need for targeted educational programs for healthcare providers to improve their knowledge and ability to educate patients.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination represents a milestone in primary prevention of sexually transmitted infections. However, little is known about its possible effects on already established HPV infections. We report the case of a 9-year-old immunosuppressed girl with refractory warts, successfully treated with the nonavalent-HPV vaccine and review the literature about the therapeutic effects of HPV vaccination on benign HPV-induced epithelial proliferations in immunocompetent and immunosuppressed patients.

  • - Herpes zoster (HZ) occurs when the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which causes chickenpox, reactivates due to weakened immune systems, particularly in the elderly or those with immune deficiencies.
  • - About 1 in 3 people will experience HZ in their lifetime, and 30% of these individuals may develop post-herpetic neuralgia, a painful complication following the skin rash.
  • - The text discusses the risk of HZ and post-herpetic neuralgia in patients with various dermatological conditions and outlines vaccination options and recommendations for preventing HZ in these high-risk groups.

We studied the detection of Treponema pallidum (TP)-IgM antibodies in the serum of 69 patients treated for syphilis. The persistence of TP-IgM antibodies in serum for more than 3 years was the only clue to suspect an active infection and, therefore, to investigate a central nervous system involvement.

In 2022-23, the human monkeypox virus (MPXV) caused a global outbreak in several non-endemic countries. Here, we evaluated the diagnostic performance of four qualitative PCR assays for the laboratory diagnosis of mpox (monkeypox) monkeypox disease. From July to August 2022, 27 positive and 10 negative specimens (lesion, crust and exudate swabs) were tested in the laboratory of the Hygiene Unit of the San Martino Hospital (Genoa, Italy) by using home-made real-time PCR to detect MPXV generic G2R_G DNA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study highlights an increase in syphilis cases, particularly among men who have sex with men, in high-income countries over the past few decades.
  • A retrospective analysis of 307 patients diagnosed with syphilis revealed that 25.8% exhibited atypical manifestations, particularly in the secondary stage, such as annular lesions and itchy erythematous plaques.
  • Atypical manifestations were linked to factors like homosexual orientation, syphilis reinfection, and higher VDRL titers, emphasizing the need for awareness as they can complicate diagnosis and treatment.

An 8-month-old male American Staffordshire terrier was referred for a no-weightbearing lameness of the right pelvic limb, hyperthermia, lethargy and inappetence.
