Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the effectiveness of episcleral plaque brachytherapy (EPBRT) in treating retinoblastoma, involving 26 tumors across 25 eyes in 21 children, primarily after relapse from other treatments.
  • Using iodine-125 as the radiation source, the procedure achieved a high eye preservation rate (15 out of 25 eyes) and a tumor control rate of 25 out of 26 tumors, with median follow-up periods of 47 and 13 months, respectively.
  • The findings suggest that EPBRT is an effective local treatment option that can potentially delay the need for more invasive therapies, such as external-beam radiotherapy, especially after initial chemotherapy.

Purpose: Central nervous system (CNS) irradiation can cause sensorineural hearing loss. The relationship between the dose to the cochlea and the development of hearing loss is unknown. Conformal radiation therapy (CRT) techniques facilitate accurate cochlear dosimetry.
