Berberine (BBR) has been proved to inhibit the malignant progression of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but the underlying molecular mechanism still needs to be further revealed. NSCLC cells (A549 and H1299) were treated with BBR. CCK8 assay, colony formation assay, flow cytometry, TUNEL staining and transwell assay were used to examine cell proliferation, apoptosis and invasion.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is a global crisis. Although many people recover from COVID-19 infection, they are likely to develop persistent symptoms similar to those of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) after discharge. Those constellations of symptoms persist for months after infection, called Long COVID, which may lead to considerable financial burden and healthcare challenges.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the safety and effectiveness of acupoint autohemotherapy (AA) in combination with Western medicine for treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • A meta-analysis of controlled trials indicated that combining AA with Western therapy improved clinical outcomes, including better lung function and increased exercise capacity in COPD patients.
  • Despite these positive results, the authors caution that further research with larger and higher-quality randomized controlled trials is needed to confirm these findings due to the limited quality and number of studies included.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a common and difficult-to-treat chronic illness that significantly impacts patients and society, leading to high rates of morbidity and mortality.
  • Acupoint Autohemotherapy (AA), a traditional Chinese medicine treatment that involves injecting the patient's own blood into acupoints, has shown promise for improving pulmonary function in COPD patients but requires further evaluation of its efficacy and safety.
  • The study will perform a comprehensive literature review of randomized controlled trials comparing AA with Western medicine to determine its effectiveness, utilizing various analytical methods to assess the quality and reliability of the evidence.
