Methods: The MCCCS randomized 46,551 patients 50-80 years to usual care, annual, or biennial screening with fecal occult-blood testing (FOBT).

As advancements in digital health lead to the generation of increasingly diverse and voluminous pharmaceutical data, it is increasingly critical that we teach trainee pharmaceutical scientists how to leverage this data to lead future innovations in healthcare and pharmaceutical research. To address this need, the University of Southern California Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (USC Mann) is incorporating data science and bioinformatics into the graduate and undergraduate curricula through introductory courses tailored for students without prior programming experience.

The phenomenology of postpartum psychosis: preliminary findings from the Massachusetts General Hospital Postpartum Psychosis Project.

Postpartum psychosis (PP) is a severe psychiatric disorder-with limited data or consensus on diagnostic criteria and clinical presentation-that affects thousands of people each year. The Massachusetts General Hospital Postpartum Psychosis Project (MGHP3) was established to: 1) describe the phenomenology of PP, and 2) identify genomic and clinical predictors in a large cohort. Results thus far point to a richer understanding of the heterogeneity and complexity of this often-misunderstood illness and its nature over time.

Addressing social needs in oncology practices: A case study of a patient-centered approach using health information technology.

Given the dramatic growth in the financial burden of cancer care over the past decades, individuals with cancer are increasingly susceptible to developing social needs (e.g., housing instability and food insecurity) and experiencing an adverse impact of these needs on care management and health outcomes.

Risk Factors for Serrated Polyps: Results From a Large, Multicenter Colonoscopy-Based Study.

Introduction: Risk factors for serrated polyps (SPs) are not well understood.

Methods: Multivariable analyses of data from a multicenter colonoscopy-based study estimated odds ratios for having either a sessile serrated lesion or traditional serrated adenoma according to participant characteristics.

Results: Six thousand seventy-eighty participants were included in the analyses (565 with either a sessile serrated lesion or traditional serrated adenoma).

Treatment of Stages I-III Squamous Cell Anal Cancer: A Comparative Effectiveness Systematic Review.

Purpose: To assess the effectiveness and harms of initial treatment strategies for stages I-III anal squamous cell cancer (SCC).

Methods: We searched Medline®, Embase®, and CENTRAL®, between January 1, 2000- March 2024, for randomized controlled trials and nonrandomized studies of interventions comparing initial treatment strategies. Individual study risk of bias (RoB) and overall strength of evidence (SOE) were evaluated for a prespecified outcome list using standardized methods.

A microporous polymer based on nonconjugated hindered biphenyls that emits blue light.

Microporous organic polymers that have three-dimensional connectivity stemming from monomers with tetrahedral or tetrahedron-like geometry can have high surface areas and strong fluorescence. There are however few examples of such polymers based on hindered biaryls, and their fluorescence has not been studied. Hypothesizing that the contortion in a hindered biphenyl moiety would modulate the optical properties of a polymer built from it, we synthesized a meta-enchained polyphenylene from a 2,2',6,6'-tetramethylbiphenyl-based monomer, in which the two phenyl rings are nearly mutually perpendicular.

Impact of a digital employer-based weight loss program on individuals age 65 or older.

Introduction: Older adults are not protected from obesity, which has been linked to frailty, cognitive impairment, and other aging-related factors. Intensive lifestyle interventions have been shown to be effective for weight loss in older adults; however, these have typically been highly intensive and less feasible for dissemination. This analysis describes weight loss in a large-scale, commercially available, digital intervention in a subset of older adults.

Aerosols transform between physical phases, as they respond to variations in environmental conditions. There are many industries that depend on these dynamic processes of crystallization and dissolution. Here, a single particle technique (an electrodynamic balance) is used to explore the crystallization and dissolution dynamics of a model system, sodium chloride.

Effects of aerobic and resistance exercise for 9 months on serum free light chains in type 2 diabetes.

Serum polyclonal free light chains (FLCs) levels are associated with overall survival in the general population, reflecting their utility as a biomarker of underlying immune activation and inflammation. Regular exercise is known to ameliorate low-grade inflammation in chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes; however, the effects of different exercise training modalities on FLCs in adults with type 2 diabetes is unknown. This study investigated the effects of 9-month of aerobic, resistance or combined supervised exercise on serum FLCs in 164 patients with type 2 diabetes (age 58 ± 8 years; 63% female).

The nociceptive activity of peripheral sensory neurons is modulated by the neuronal membrane proteasome.

Proteasomes are critical for peripheral nervous system (PNS) function. Here, we investigate mammalian PNS proteasomes and reveal the presence of the neuronal membrane proteasome (NMP). We show that specific inhibition of the NMP on distal nerve fibers innervating the mouse hind paw leads to reduction in mechanical and pain sensitivity.

In their recent study, Sharon and colleagues (Pepelnjak et al, 2024) developed an advanced proteomics method (PiP-MS) to comprehensively explore 20S proteasome substrates in the human proteome.

Multilevel Interventions to Improve Colorectal Cancer Screening in an Urban Native American Community: A Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial.

Native Americans have the highest burden of colorectal cancer (CRC) and the lowest rates of CRC screening across the United States. The disparities in CRC screening were made worse during the pandemic, creating an unmet need to implement evidence-based, multilevel interventions to improve CRC screening uptake. This can be achieved through an organized outreach program with identification of screen-eligible individuals using health records from the clinic; and a screening program with the following: (1) a mailed invitation, (2) a package of materials so patients can complete a fecal immunochemical test (FIT) kit from their homes, (3) reminder calls and a letter, and (4) navigation to a diagnostic colonoscopy.

Mortality and cancer incidence in perfluorooctanesulfonyl fluoride production workers.

Background: Exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has been associated with several health outcomes, though few occupationally-exposed populations have been studied. We evaluated mortality and cancer incidence in a cohort of perfluorooctanesulfonyl fluoride-based specialty chemical manufacturing workers.

Methods: The cohort included any employee who ever worked at the facility from 1961 to 2010 (N = 4045), with a primary interest in those who had 365 cumulative days of employment (N = 2659).

Projected Colorectal Cancer Incidence and Mortality Based on Observed Adherence to Colonoscopy and Sequential Stool-Based Screening.

Introduction: Modeling supporting recommendations for colonoscopy and stool-based colorectal cancer (CRC) screening tests assumes 100% sequential participant adherence. The impact of observed adherence on the long-term effectiveness of screening is unknown. We evaluated the effectiveness of a program of screening colonoscopy every 10 years vs annual high-sensitivity guaiac-based fecal occult blood testing (HSgFOBT) using observed sequential adherence data.

Effect of ginger supplementation on the fecal microbiome in subjects with prior colorectal adenoma.

Ginger has been associated with a decreased incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) through reduction in inflammatory pathways and inhibition of tumor growth. Recent pre-clinical models have implicated changes in the gut microbiome as a possible mediator of the ginger effect on CRC. We hypothesized that, in adults previously diagnosed with a colorectal adenoma, ginger supplementation would alter the fecal microbiome in the direction consistent with its CRC-inhibitory effect.

Internal-state-dependent control of feeding behavior via hippocampal ghrelin signaling.

Hunger is an internal state that not only invigorates feeding but also acts as a contextual cue for higher-order control of anticipatory feeding-related behavior. The ventral hippocampus is crucial for differentiating optimal behavior across contexts, but how internal contexts such as hunger influence hippocampal circuitry is unknown. In this study, we investigated the role of the ventral hippocampus during feeding behavior across different states of hunger in mice.
