Small GTPase is a type of crucial regulator in eukaryotes. It acts as a molecular switch by binding with GTP and GDP in cytoplasm, affecting various cellular processes. Small GTPase were divided into five subfamilies based on sequence, structure and function: Ras, Rho, Rab, Arf/Sar and Ran, with Rab being the largest subfamily.

With the advent of advanced sequencing technologies, non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) are increasingly pivotal and play highly regulated roles in the modulation of diverse aspects of plant growth and stress response. This includes a spectrum of ncRNA classes, ranging from small RNAs to long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs). Notably, among these, lncRNAs emerge as significant and intricate components within the broader ncRNA regulatory networks.

Glycine-rich RNA binding proteins (GR-RBPs), a branch of RNA binding proteins (RBPs), play integral roles in regulating various aspects of RNA metabolism regulation, such as RNA processing, transport, localization, translation, and stability, and ultimately regulate gene expression and cell fate. However, our current understanding of GR-RBPs has predominantly been centered on Arabidopsis thaliana, a model plant for investigating plant growth and development. Nonetheless, an increasing body of literature has emerged in recent years, shedding light on the presence and functions of GRPs in diverse crop species.

The normal development of follicles involves a series of complex life processes such as ordered transcriptional activation and inhibition, which is crucial for female reproductive ability. Histone methylation can change the chromatin state in cells and affect the transcription activity of genes. Current studies indicate that epigenetic modifications such as histone methylation play an important regulatory role in follicular development in female mammals.

In recent years, much progress has been made in elucidating the functional roles of plant glycine-rich RNA-binding proteins (GR-RBPs) during development and stress responses. Canonical GR-RBPs contain an RNA recognition motif (RRM) or a cold-shock domain (CSD) at the N-terminus and a glycine-rich domain at the C-terminus, which have been associated with several different RNA processes, such as alternative splicing, mRNA export and RNA editing. However, many aspects of GR-RBP function, the targeting of their RNAs, interacting proteins and the consequences of the RNA target process are not well understood.

Horticultural food crops are important sources of nutrients for humans. With the increase of the global population, enhanced horticulture food crop production has become a new challenge, and enriching their nutritional content has also been required. Gene editing systems, such as zinc finger nucleases, transcription activator-like effector nucleases, and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated 9 (Cas9), have accelerated crop improvement through the modification of targeted genomes precisely.

The seasonal cycle of growth and regression in the prostate gland of wild ground squirrel provide a unique research model to understand the morphological changes of prostate glands. Our previous studies showed that the local production of dihydrotestosterone could affect the morphology and function of the prostate gland in either an autocrine or paracrine manner. In the present study, we attempted to gain more insight into this process by investigating the expression of key factors implicated in cell proliferation, apoptosis, and the cell cycle, including mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR), cyclin-D2, p21, p27 and retinoblastoma 1 (pRB).

Prostaglandins (PGs) play a pivotal role in uterine reproductive process including maternal recognition of pregnancy, cell proliferation, and myometrium contractions in mammals. In this study, we investigated the immunolocalizations and expression levels of Prostaglandin E2 synthases cyclo-oxygenase (COX)-1 and COX-2, as well as one of PGE2 receptor subtypes 4 (EP4) in the uteri of the wild Daurian ground squirrels (Spermophilus dauricus) during the breeding and non-breeding seasons. Histologically, the thickness of endometrium: myometrium ratio in the uteri of the breeding season was higher than that of the non-breeding season.

The growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) system plays an important role in regulating the cellular growth and organ development. The present study investigated the seasonal expressions of growth hormone receptor (GHR), IGF-1 and insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R) in the scented glands of the muskrats. Morphological changes in the scented glands of the muskrats were observed significantly between the breeding and non-breeding seasons.

In order to study the influence of different substituent groups on the fluorescence properties, a series of bis-Schiff bases (L) with electron-donating groups (salicylaldehyde, o-vanillin, 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde) and electron-drawing group (4-formylbenzoic acid) have been synthesized, and characterized by IR spectrum, NMR, mass spectrum, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The investigation of the fluorescent properties reveals that the fluorescence can be enhanced when the bis-Schiff base ligands with electron-donating groups complex with Zn ion, while other kinds of metal complexes with these ligands do not show any enhancement, whereas no fluorescence enhancement can be observed when the ligand with electron-drawing group complexes with all different types of metal ions. In addition, as for the ligands with electron-donating groups detecting zinc ion, the fluorescence intensity is linear correlated with the concentration of zinc ion.

To meet the labeling and traceability requirement of genetically modified (GM) maize and their products for trade and regulation, it is essential to develop a specific detection method for monitoring the presence of GM content. In this work, six GM maize lines, including GA21, Bt11, NK603, Bt176, Mir604, and Mon810, were simultaneously detected by universal primer-multiplex-polymerase chain reaction (UP-M-PCR), and the amplicons for the six event-specific genes as well as the endogenous Ivr gene were successfully separated by the method of capillary electrophoresis-laser-induced fluorescence (CE-LIF). The UP-M-PCR method overcame the disadvantages in conventional M-PCR, such as complex manipulation, lower sensitivity, amplification disparity resulting from different primers, etc.

More and more stacked GMOs have been developed for more improved functional properties and/or a stronger intended characteristic, such as antipest, improved product efficiency etc. Bt11 x GA21 is a new kind of stacked GM maize developed by Monsanto Company. Since there are no unique flanking sequences in stacked GMOs, up to now, no appropriate method has been reported to accurately detect them.
