Objective: To identify the prevalence and factors associated with T-score discordance between the spine and hip, as well as between the paretic and non-paretic hips in hemiplegic stroke patients, this study investigated bone mineral density (BMD) patterns. Bone loss predominantly affects the paretic hip after a stroke, and typical clinical assessments using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) that scan the lumbar spine (LS) and a single hip may overlook an osteoporosis diagnosis. This oversight could potentially lead to suboptimal treatment for stroke patients.

  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of enhanced monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) with a target of -2.00 diopters (D) in patients undergoing cataract surgery, comparing it with an emmetropia target.
  • Researchers analyzed medical records of patients, measuring various visual acuity outcomes three months post-surgery for two groups: one with a target of emmetropia and another with -2.00 D.
  • Results indicated that while the -2.00 D group had better near vision without glasses, it had poorer distance vision compared to the emmetropia group, suggesting that IOLs targeting -2.00 D may be beneficial for myopic patients.

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common respiratory disease with acute exacerbation (AECOPD) being a common sequalae which negatively impact health status, rates of hospitalization and readmission, and disease progression. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) has been studied in COPD in both stable state and acute exacerbations, which has been shown to have small beneficial effects in stable COPD, as well as AECOPD. Yet, there has been lack of study with well-designed protocol to assess the role of NAC in more objective outcomes in AECOPD.

In this computer simulation study, we examine four different statistical approaches of linearity assessment, including two variants of deviation from linearity (individual (IDL) and averaged (AD)), along with detection capabilities of residuals of linear regression (individual and averaged). From the results of the simulation, the following broad suggestions are provided to laboratory practitioners when performing linearity assessment. A high imprecision can challenge linearity investigations by producing a high false positive rate or low power of detection.
