We report an electron momentum spectroscopy study on the valence electronic structure of dimethyl sulfide. The binding energy and electron momentum profiles are measured using a high-sensitivity (e, 2e) apparatus employing a symmetric non-coplanar geometry at an incident energy of 1200 eV plus binding energy. The measurements are compared with the theoretical calculations by density functional theory performed both at equilibrium molecular geometry and by considering vibrational effects through a harmonic analytical quantum mechanical approach.

The shielding effect of this tip is studied through comparing the detection efficiency with the normal tip by both experiment and simulation. The results show that the backscattering count rate detected by the SPEES instrument using the normal tip begins to decrease as the tip approaches to the sample surface within 21 μm, while that using the ME tip only starts to drop off within 1 μm.

In the present work, nonlinear electron scattering phenomena is experimentally verified on Au nanostructures by measuring inelastic scattering of electrons field-emitted from tungsten tip. The relative intensity of the electron-energy-loss peak associated with the plasmonic excitation of Au shows again to increase nonlinearly with the electric field generated by the tip-sample bias, demonstrating the generality of nonlinear electron scattering process in plasmonic system.

The spatial resolution of spectroscopy mapping is determined to be better than 0.7 ± 0.

The experimental electron momentum profiles are compared with Hartree-Fock and density functional theory (DFT) calculations using B3LYP hybrid functional with the 6-31G and 6-311+G* basis sets. Generally, the shapes of the experimental momentum profiles are well reproduced by DFT calculations using larger basis sets 6-311 + G*.
