High-efficiency organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have generated tremendous research interest. One of the exciting possibilities of OLEDs is the use of flexible plastic substrates, which unfortunately have a mismatching refractive index compared with the conventional ITO anode and the air. To unlock the light loss on flexible plastic, we report a high-efficiency flexible OLED directly fabricated on a double-sided nanotextured polycarbonate substrate by thermal nanoimprint lithography.

Long-term spaceflight induces both physiological and psychological changes in astronauts. To understand the neural mechanisms underlying these physiological and psychological changes, it is critical to investigate the effects of microgravity on the functional architecture of the brain. In this study, we used resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) to study whether the functional architecture of the brain is altered after 45 days of -6° head-down tilt (HDT) bed rest, which is a reliable model for the simulation of microgravity.

Space is characterized by risk and uncertainty. As humans play an important role in long-duration space missions, the ability to make risky decisions effectively is important for astronauts who spend extended time periods in space. The present study used the Balloon Analog Risk Task to conduct both behavioral and fMRI experiments to evaluate the effects of simulated microgravity on individuals' risk-taking behavior and the neural basis of the effect.

Background: Our previous study found that somatostatin (SST) inhibited the intestinal inflammatory injury in a macaque model of intestinal ischemia-reperfusion (IIR); however, the underlying mechanism was unclear.

Aims: The present study was aimed to investigate the effects of SST on IFN-γ and the systemic inflammatory response after IIR.

Methods: Fifteen macaques were randomly divided into controls, IIR and SST+ IIR groups.

Sliding tactile perception is a basic function for human beings to determine the mechanical properties of object surfaces and recognize materials. Imitating this process, this paper proposes a novel finger-shaped tactile sensor based on a thin piezoelectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film for surface texture measurement. A parallelogram mechanism is designed to ensure that the sensor applies a constant contact force perpendicular to the object surface, and a 2-dimensional movable mechanical structure is utilized to generate the relative motion at a certain speed between the sensor and the object surface.

Background: Antiretroviral therapy (ART) improves morbidity and mortality in patients with HIV, however high rates of loss to follow-up (LTF) and mortality have been documented in HIV care and treatment programs.

Methods: We analyzed routinely-collected data on HIV-infected patients ≥ 15 years enrolled at 41 healthcare facilities in Rwanda from 2005 to 2010. LTF was defined as not attending clinic in the last 12 months for pre-ART patients and 6 months for ART patients.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-activated gene-1 (NAG-1), a member of the transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) superfamily, has been demonstrated to possess antitumorigenic and proapoptotic activities in gastric cancer cells. In the present study, the expression of NAG-1 was assessed in human gastric carcinoma, tumor-adjacent normal tissues and normal gastric mucosa, with the aim to investigate the role of NAG-1 in the carcinogenesis and development of gastric carcinoma. NAG-1 protein expression was evaluated using immunohistochemical staining, while the expression of NAG-1 mRNA was evaluated using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction.

Somatostatin (SST) is a gut peptide that is able to inhibit the growth of tumor cells in gastric cancer and other types of cancer. The present study investigated the mRNA and protein levels of SST and SST receptors (SSTRs) in human gastric cancer, and detected the DNA methylation of the SST promoter. The protein levels of SST were detected using a radioimmunoassay in 102 human gastric tissue specimens (51 pairs of samples from 51 gastric cancer patients, each pair of samples included a cancer tissue and a normal tissue sample).

Ultrasound was uniquely applied to promote the extraction of cheap microbial flocculant (MBF) from waste activated sludge (WAS) of municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Various influencing factors, including ultrasonic conditions (frequency, power density and treatment time) and WAS features (pH, concentration and source), were systematically investigated. The propitious ultrasonic conditions for MBF preparation from WAS were 20 kHz, 2.

Background: Acute inflammation and its timely resolution play important roles in the body's responses to the environmental stimulation. Although IFN-γ is well known for the induction of inflammation, its role in the inflammation resolution is still poorly understood.

Methodology And Principal Findings: In this study, we investigated the function of interferon gamma (IFN-γ) during the resolution of PMA-induced skin inflammation in vivo.

Background: Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) is an important transcription factor that modulates cellular responses to hypoxia and also plays critical roles in cancer progression. Recently, somatic mutations and decreased copy number of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) were detected in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). These mutations were shown to have the potential to cause mitochondrial dysfunction.

Intestinal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R)-induced gut injury remains a challenge for critically ill patients. This study aims to test whether mesenteric lymph pathway is involved in intestinal I/R injury and whether somatostatin (SST) affects mesenteric lymph pathway after mesenteric reperfusion. Intestinal I/R rats were treated with SST-14 by intravenous injection combined with intraperitoneal injection before occlusion of the SMA until the end of the experiment.

Bladder cancer (BC) is one of the most common human malignancies that account for major death in the world. Apoptin that is derived from chicken anemia virus (CAV) has displayed tumor-specific cytotoxic activity in a variety of human carcinomas. However, the magical function of apoptin in bladder carcinoma cell lines has not been identified yet.

Article Synopsis
  • Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) uses a type III secretion system to deliver proteins, like EspF, that help it colonize intestinal cells by forming lesions and causing cellular damage.
  • The study created a mutant strain lacking the espF gene, revealing that EspF is crucial for EHEC’s ability to attach to and efface intestinal cells and induce apoptosis in mitochondria.
  • Findings suggest that the EspF protein's N-terminal domain plays a significant role in mitochondrial targeting and cell death, offering insights into the disease mechanism of EHEC O157:H7.

Nonresolving inflammation is a hallmark of many types of tumors and the molecular mechanisms maintaining this inflammation are still largely unknown. In a two-stage carcinogenesis model, we observed here that the lack of IFN-γ receptor or neutralization of IFN-γ accelerated spontaneous papilloma regression in mice. The impaired maintenance of local inflammation was associated with reduced IFN-γ and enhanced biosynthesis of proresolution lipid mediator lipoxin A4 (LXA4).
