Background: Whether the Western pT1acN0M0 gastric cancer (GC) patients who met the Japanese expanded criteria could be the candidates for endoscopic treatment (ET) remains unclear because of unknown long-term survival outcomes.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study using data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program was performed. The survival differences between pT1acN0M0 gastric adenocarcinoma patients who received ET or gastrectomy treatment (GT) were evaluated using multivariate survival analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the characteristics and treatment strategies for lesions in the pineal region of the brain, which are challenging to remove.
  • A review of 101 patients showed no significant differences in outcomes between those with hydrocephalus and those without, although younger patients with hydrocephalus were more affected by infections.
  • The research highlighted that endoscopic-assisted surgery improved resection rates, while endoscopic third ventriculostomy was more effective for managing hydrocephalus; CSF diversion was crucial for patients with severe hydrocephalus, despite not impacting overall prognosis.

Background And Aims: Current guidelines recommend consideration of endoscopic therapy (ET) when treating selected early gastric cancers. However, clinical decision-making on ET versus gastrectomy for early adenocarcinoma of esophagogastric junction (AEGJ) remains challenging because of uncertain long-term outcomes.

Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database from 2004 to 2017 of early AEGJ patients underwent ET or gastrectomy.

Nuclear factor (NF)-κB-ty -50mediated neuroinflammation plays a crucial role in early brain injury (EBI) after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). As an important negative feedback regulator of NF-κB, A20 is essential for inflammatory homeostasis. Herein, we tested the hypothesis that A20 attenuates EBI by establishing NF-κB-associated negative feedback after experimental SAH.

Nuclear factor (NF)-κB-mediated neuroinflammation is an important mechanism of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH)-induced neurotoxicity. Silent information regulator 1 (SIRT1) plays a multi-protective effect in a variety of diseases by deacetylating and inhibiting NF-κB/p65. However, the role of SIRT1 in brain damage following ICH remains unclear.

Background: Our aim was to evaluate the prognostic value of the number of lymph nodes examined (eLNs) on survival in ypN0 gastric cancer (GC) patients, and further to define the optimal number of lymph nodes needed to be examined during radical gastrectomy of ypN0 GC patients.

Methods: A total of 1127 ypN0 GC patients during 2004-2015 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database were included. The number of eLNs cutoff points that determined the greatest actuarial survival difference was calculated by the X-tile program.

Background: The question that whether the criteria for endoscopic resection of early gastric non-cardia cancer (GNCC) is appropriate for early gastric cardia cancer (GCC) remains unclear. Thus, our aim was to evaluate the influence of tumor location on lymph node metastasis (LNM) and overall survival (OS) for early gastric cancer (GC).

Methods: A total of 5440 early GC patients in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database were identified.

Our aim was to investigate whether the modified American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) staging system based on the node ratio can further improve the capacity of prognosis assessment for gastric cancer (GC) patients regardless of the number of lymph nodes examined (eLNs). A total of 17,187 GC patients in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database were included. On the basis of a training set of 7,660 GC patients, we built the tumor-node ratio-metastasis (TNrM) staging system, which was then externally validated with a validation set of 9,527 GC patients.

Background: Our aim was to evaluate the prognostic value of the number of lymph nodes examined (eLNs) in patients with node-negative gastric cancer (GC) and further to adjust the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) 8th staging system based on the number of eLNs.

Methods: Node-negative GC patients diagnosed during 1988-2015 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database were included. On the basis of a primary cohort of 4159 node-negative GC patients, we built the adjusted AJCC 8th staging system, which was then internally validated by a bootstrap method, and externally validated with an independent cohort of 5565 node-negative GC patients.

Inflammatory injury and neuronal apoptosis participate in the period of early brain injury (EBI) after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Suppression of inflammation has recently been shown to reduce neuronal death and neurobehavioral dysfunction post SAH. Biochanin A (BCA), a natural bioactive isoflavonoid, has been confirmed to emerge the anti-inflammatory pharmacological function.

Accumulating evidence suggests that neuroinflammation plays a critical role in early brain injury after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Pannexin-1 channels, as a member of gap junction proteins located on the plasma membrane, releases ATP, ions, second messengers, neurotransmitters, and molecules up to 1 kD into the extracellular space, when activated. Previous studies identified that the opening of Pannexin-1 channels is essential for cellular migration, apoptosis and especially inflammation, but its effects on inflammatory response in SAH model have not been explored yet.

Accessory breast cancers in males are extremely rare, and only a few cases have been reported in the literature. In this paper, an 87-year-old male patient was diagnosed with an accessory breast cancer by means of computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT), and immunohistochemistry based on needle biopsy, and has undergone successful resection and postoperative adjuvant endocrine therapy. He was the oldest male patient with an accessory breast cancer reported in the Chinese Hospital Knowledge Database and PubMed literature from 1975 to 2015.

Abundant erythrocytes remain and lyse partially in the subarachnoid space after severe subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). But the effect of subarachnoid erythrocyte lysate on brain injury is still not completely clear. In this study, autologous erythrocytes (the non-lysate group) and their lysate (the lysate group) were injected separately into the cistern magna of rabbits to induce a model of experimental SAH, although the control group received isotonic sodium chloride solution instead of erythrocyte solution.

Early brain injury (EBI) determines the unfavorable outcomes after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Fisetin, a natural flavonoid, has anti-inflammatory and neuroprotection properties in several brain injury models, but the role of fisetin on EBI following SAH remains unknown. Our study aimed to explore the effects of fisetin on EBI after SAH in rats.

Evidence has shown that the activation of the autophagy pathway after experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) protects against neuronal damage. Tert-butylhydroquinone (tBHQ), a commonly used nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) activator, was found to significantly enhance autophagy activation. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of tBHQ treatment on early stage brain injury at 24 h after SAH.

Convincing evidence indicates that apoptosis contributes to the unfavorable prognosis of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a significant cause of morbidity and case fatality throughout the world. Gelsolin (GSN) is a Ca(2+)-dependent actin filament severing, capping, and nucleating protein, as well as multifunctional regulator of cell structure and metabolism, including apoptosis. In the present study, we intended to investigate the expression pattern and cell distribution of GSN in rat brain after experimental SAH.

Increasing evidence indicates that poor outcomes after brain hemorrhage, especially after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), can be attributed largely to dysfunction of the cerebral microcirculation. However, the cause of this dysfunction remains unclear. Here, we investigated changes in the cerebral microcirculation after regional hemorrhage in the subarachnoid space using the closed cranial window technique in mice.

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is one of the life-threatening diseases with high morbidity and mortality rates. Small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO)-specific proteases 3 (SENP3), a member of the SUMO-specific protease family, was identified as an isopeptidase that deconjugates SUMOylation (The covalent modification by SUMO) of modified protein substrates. It is reported that SUMO-2/3 conjugation, a member of SUMOylation, presented neuroprotection.

Early brain injury (EBI) plays a key role in the pathogenesis of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Although the neuroprotective effects of ghrelin have been demonstrated in several studies, whether ghrelin reduces EBI after SAH remains unknown. In this study, we hypothesized that treatment with ghrelin would attenuate EBI after SAH, and that this protection would be mediated, at least in part, by activation of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway.

Apoptosis has been proven to play a crucial role in early brain injury pathogenesis and to represent a target for the treatment of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Previously, we demonstrated that astaxanthin (ATX) administration markedly reduced neuronal apoptosis in the early period after SAH. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain obscure.
