Article Synopsis
  • This study tested 80 samples of suspected kratom powder using DNA analysis with two different primer sets to identify plant species.
  • The first analysis with the ITS3/ITS4 primers found 29 samples were 100% kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) and 6 samples were nearly identical (99.73%), while 5 samples were unreadable.
  • A follow-up with ITS-p3/ITS-u4 primers revealed that 32 samples were 100% kratom, showing this method is better for distinguishing between kratom and similar species like Neolamarckia cadamba, which can be confused due to their similar appearances.

Dysregulation of androgen signaling and pericellular proteolysis is necessary for prostate cancer progression, but the links between them are still obscure. In this study, we show how the membrane-anchored serine protease TMPRSS2 stimulates a proteolytic cascade that mediates androgen-induced prostate cancer cell invasion, tumor growth, and metastasis. We found that matriptase serves as a substrate for TMPRSS2 in mediating this proinvasive action of androgens in prostate cancer.
