Efficient near-infrared detection of specific DNA with single nucleotide polymorphism selectivity is important for diagnostics and biomedical research. Herein, we report the use of gallium arsenide (GaAs) as a sensing platform for probing DNA immobilization and targeting DNA hybridization, resulting in ∼8-fold enhanced GaAs photoluminescence (PL) at ∼875 nm. The new signal amplification strategy, further coupled with the plasmonic effect of Au nanoparticles, is capable of detecting DNA molecules with a detection limit of 0.

Study Design: An in vivo study was conducted to test the effect of hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) on intervertebral disc degeneration in Sprague-Dawley rats.

Objective: To observe the changes in intervertebral disc height and levels of glycosaminoglycan, collagen, interleukin-1β (IL-1β), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in degenerated intervertebral discs after HBO therapy.

Summary Of Background Data: Although the involvement of IL-1β, PGE-2, NO, and low O2 concentration has been demonstrated in intervertebral disc degeneration, the actual mechanism is not clear.

Background: Pathology of the long head of the biceps tendon (LHB) is commonly associated with rotator cuff tears (RCTs). Superior labral anterior-posterior (SLAP) lesions can also occur with RCTs. The purpose of this study was to include SLAP lesions as part of LHB pathology in surgical cases of RCT and define the role of SLAP lesions in RCTs.

Purpose: The fixation and incorporation of ruptured rotator cuff tendon to bone is a major concern in rotator cuff repair surgery. Rotator cuff repair usually fails at the tendon-bone interface, especially in case of large or massive tears. To enhance tendon-bone healing, an injectable hydrogel made with periosteal progenitor cells(PPCs) and poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) tethered with bone morphogenic protein-2(BMP-2) was developed to encourage extracellular matrix synthesis for tendon-to-bone healing in rotator cuff repair.

Study Design: An in vitro study with degenerated human lumbar intervertebral disc specimens cultured under hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO).

Objective: To observe the changes in interleukin (IL)-1β, prostaglandin (PG)-E2, nitric oxide (NO), cell growth, and apoptosis of the human nucleus pulposus cell (NPC) after HBO.

Summary Of Background Data: Intervertebral disc degeneration has been demonstrated as related to IL-1β, PG-E2, NO, and O2 concentration but the actual mechanism is not clear.

Semiconductor micro- and nanotubes can be formed by strain-induced self-rolling of membranes. The effect of geometrical dimensions on the self-rolling behavior of epitaxial mismatch-strained In(x)Ga(1-x)As-GaAs membranes are systematically studied both experimentally and theoretically using the finite element method. The final rolling direction depends on the length and width of the membrane as well as the diameter of the rolled-up tube.

Purpose: In this case-series outcome study, we present our surgical technique for single-bundle anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with periosteum-enveloping hamstring tendon graft at a minimum of 2 years' follow-up.

Methods: From 2000 to 2005, ACL reconstruction with a periosteum-enveloping hamstring tendon graft was performed in 368 patients (372 knees). Of those patients, 312 who completed at least 2 years of follow-up were included for analysis.

Compound semiconductors like gallium arsenide (GaAs) provide advantages over silicon for many applications, owing to their direct bandgaps and high electron mobilities. Examples range from efficient photovoltaic devices to radio-frequency electronics and most forms of optoelectronics. However, growing large, high quality wafers of these materials, and intimately integrating them on silicon or amorphous substrates (such as glass or plastic) is expensive, which restricts their use.

Semiconductor nanowires have potential applications in photovoltaics, batteries, and thermoelectrics. We report a top-down fabrication method that involves the combination of superionic-solid-state-stamping (S4) patterning with metal-assisted-chemical-etching (MacEtch), to produce silicon nanowire arrays with defined geometry and optical properties in a manufacturable fashion. Strong light emission in the entire visible and near infrared wavelength range at room temperature, tunable by etching condition, attributed to surface features, and enhanced by silver surface plasmon, is demonstrated.

Spatial light interference microscopy (SLIM) is a novel method developed in our laboratory that provides quantitative phase images of transparent structures with a 0.3 nm spatial and 0.03 nm temporal accuracy owing to the white light illumination and its common path interferometric geometry.

We report the controlled growth of planar GaAs semiconductor nanowires on (100) GaAs substrates using atmospheric pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition with Au as catalyst. These nanowires with uniform diameters are self-aligned in <110> direction in the plane of (100). The dependence of planar nanowire morphology and growth rate as a function of growth temperature provides insights into the growth mechanism and identified an ideal growth window of 470 +/- 10 degrees C for the formation of such planar geometry.
