Dengue-related ocular complications were considered rare, but recent evidence points to a broader spectrum of manifestations, including uveitis. This study utilized the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) to investigate the incidence of uveitis in dengue patients, aiming to fill this research gap. This population-based, retrospective cohort study utilized the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) and included patients with and without Dengue fever.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the potential link between tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and uveitis (inflammation of the eye) due to shared autoimmune pathways.
  • It analyzed data from over 31,000 tinnitus patients compared to more than 124,000 individuals without tinnitus, from 2001 to 2018.
  • Results indicated that tinnitus patients have a significantly higher risk of developing uveitis, suggesting a possible association between the two conditions.

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have a greater frequency of ocular extra-intestinal manifestations (O-EIMs) than the general population, while Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) have inconsistent prevalence, according to previous studies. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of O-EIMs in CD and UC, respectively. We systemically reviewed O-EIMs and IBD across several online databases.

Multiple vaccines are now being used across the world, and several studies have described cases of corneal graft rejection following the administration of the COVID-19 vaccine. The purpose of this article is to review the corneal adverse event that occurred following COVID-19 vaccine administration. The literature search was conducted in March 2022 using MEDLINE, PubMed, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews.

Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial disease that causes ocular discomfort and visual impairment on a damaged ocular surface. Lifitegrast, a novel T-cell integrin antagonist, was approved in the United States in July 2016 as a 5% (50 mg/mL) ophthalmic solution for DED management. Currently, no meta-analysis and systemic review based on relevant studies have been conducted.

Background and Objectives: Intravitreal injections (IVI) of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitors are guideline-indicated treatments for diabetic macular edema (DME). However, some recent data have suggested that IVI VEGF inhibitors might, through systemic absorption, lead to a reduction in renal function. Our study aims to compare changes in glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) between patients who received IVI ranibizumab and aflibercept treatment and patients who have not received IVI treatments.

Choroidal ruptures occur in 5% to 10% closed-globe injuries with wide variation in visual prognosis, which depending on the visual acuity at presentation, the location of the rupture, and other associated ocular injuries. We reported a case of bilateral traumatic choroidal rupture with a large macular hole. We performed surgery in the right eye of microincisional vitrectomy, temporally inverted internal limiting membrane (ILM) flap, and C3F8 tamponade; then microincisional vitrectomy, fibrotic scar removal, double inverted ILM flap, and C3F8 tamponade in the left eye.

Introduction: We report a male who presented with acute visual defect and was diagnosed with urticarial vasculitis with recurrent branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) after systemic disease survey, fluorescein angiography (FA), and MultiColor imaging (MCI).

Case Report: A 47-year-old male with a history of urticarial vasculitis presented with visual defect OD. Fundus examination showed two foci of ischemic retinal whitening beneath the inferior arcade and above the superior arcade.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the incidence of uveitis in patients diagnosed with systemic lymphoma in Taiwan between 2000 and 2017, using a nationwide cohort from the Taiwan National Health Insurance system.
  • Among the 6,846 systemic lymphoma patients, the results indicated a higher incidence rate of uveitis compared to the matched non-systemic lymphoma group, with a calculated adjusted hazard ratio suggesting increased risk in the systemic lymphoma cohort.
  • However, after further adjustments through propensity score matching, the significance of this risk was reduced, indicating that while there is an association, the direct impact of systemic lymphoma on uveitis development may not be as strong as initially suggested.

Background: To compare refractive outcomes after phacoemulsification and toric IOL implantation using two different toric calculators for initial astigmatism assessment in a real-world setting.

Methods: This was a retrospective, comparative, interventional case series. Patients over 30-year-old who underwent phacoemulsification and toric IOL implantation (AcrySof Toric IOL) by the same surgeon between 2017 and 2018 were included.

Penetrating orbital injury with a foreign body is a complex problem that requires an interdisciplinary therapeutic approach. Conventionally, an external approach using either transconjuntival or transseptal entry is used by an ophthalmologist. However, there is a risk of damage to the optic nerve and orbital tissue using only the traditional approach.

Tumor of lacrimal sac invading into orbit has to be removed carefully to avoid injuring the eyeball, optic nerve, and extraocular muscles. Transnasal endoscopic-assisted tumor excision is a method to remove the tumor from the nasal cavity through the lacrimal sac to the orbit in one procedure. A 55-year-old female patient with thyroid carcinoma removed more than 10 years ago.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the association between early-onset cataract and tinnitus using a population-based database.

Methods: Retrospective claims data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database were analysed. Study subjects comprised patients with early-onset cataract, aged 20-55 years and diagnosed between 2000 and 2010 (n = 2084) and a comparison cohort without the disease (n = 8336).

Background: Twin infants are likely at great risk for ROP, but studies reported conflicting findings and population studies examining the risk of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in twins is limited. We aimed to evaluate the ROP risk in the cohort of one of twins, comparing to singletons.

Material And Methods: Using insurance claims data of a half of children in Taiwan ages 18 and less, we established a twin cohort (N = 27830) born in 1998-2009 and a randomly selected singleton cohort (N = 111080) frequency matched by sex, birth year, residential area and parental occupation and followed up to 2012 years.

Purpose: To evaluate the thickness and shape of the posterior lamellar graft in Descemet stripping and automated endothelial keratoplasty after long-term observation.

Methods: All patients who underwent Descemet stripping and automated endothelial keratoplasty including simple and triple Descemet stripping and automated endothelial keratoplasty between August 2009 and May 2014 were enrolled in this retrospective study. To assess postoperative thickness and shape of the Descemet stripping and automated endothelial keratoplasty graft, images of the graft taken at the center (C), mid-periphery at 4 mm optical zone (P1), and periphery at 6 mm optical zone (P2) at 1, 2, and 3 years postoperatively were obtained using anterior segment optical coherence tomography.

Early-onset cataracts (EOC) are associated with an increased inflammatory response; therefore, a potential risk of other inflammatory diseases, like peptic ulcer, may be related. This study investigated the risk of peptic ulcer after being diagnosed with EOC. Retrospective claims data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database were analyzed.

Loss of p53 function has been linked to progression of pterygium. MiR-200a is known to be controlled by p53. Here, we hypothesize that expression of miR-200a and downstream ZEB1/ZEB2 genes are regulated epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) involved in the pathogenesis and recurrence of pterygium.

Purpose: MiRNAs are small noncoding RNAs that have been implicated in tumor development. They regulate target gene expression either by mRNA degradation or by translation repression. Activation of β-catenin has been linked to pterygium progression.
