Identification of membrane proteins regulated by ADAM15 by SUSPECS proteomics.

ADAM15 is a member of the disintegrin-metalloproteinase family of sheddases, which plays a role in several biological processes including cartilage homeostasis. In contrast with well-characterized ADAMs, such as the canonical sheddases ADAM17 and ADAM10, little is known about substrates of ADAM15 or how the enzyme exerts its biological functions. Herein, we used "surface-spanning enrichment with click-sugars (SUSPECS)" proteomics to identify ADAM15 substrates and/or proteins regulated by the proteinase at the cell surface of chondrocyte-like cells.

Tendon-to-bone healing after repairing full-thickness rotator cuff tear with a triple-loaded single-row method in young patients.

Background: Arthroscopic repair is recommended for young patients with full-thickness rotator cuff tears (RCTs), but the healing rates have raised concerns. The Southern California Orthopedic Institute (SCOI) row method has been developed based on greater than 3 decades of experience with excellent clinical outcomes; however, studies with a focus on the younger patient population are limited in number. The current study assessed the short-term clinical outcome and the initial tendon-to-bone healing in a young cohort after repair of a full-thickness RCT using the SCOI row method.

Investigation of mean glandular dose in diagnostic mammography in China.

A survey of 420 exposures of mammography was performed with the parameters recorded. Entrance skin air kerma (ESAK) was measured and the mean glandular dose (MGD) was calculated according to the Dance's formula. Correlation analysis showed that several factors could affect the MGD level.

Prevalence and risk factors of problematic Internet use: a cross-national comparison of Japanese and Chinese university students.

The aim of the present study was to compare risk factors for problematic Internet use (PIU) among Japanese and Chinese university students. A sample of 267 Japanese and 236 Chinese first year university students responded to questionnaires on the severity of PIU, depression, self-image/image of others, and perceived parental child-rearing styles. The results indicated that Japanese participants were more likely to demonstrate PIU than their Chinese counterparts.

Atorvastatin inhibits myocardial cell apoptosis in a rat model with post-myocardial infarction heart failure by downregulating ER stress response.

Objective: To determine the effect of atorvastatin on rat heart failure after myocardial infarction and to investigate the underlying mechanism of atorvastatin-mediated myocardium protection.

Methods: Thirty-eight rats were randomly divided into three groups: a heart failure model group (model group), a heart failure plus atorvastatin treatment group (atorvastatin group) and a sham-surgery group (control group). The rat heart failure model was established by ligation of the left anterior descending of coronary arteries (LADs).

Phenolic composition and antioxidant activity in seed coats of 60 Chinese black soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) varieties.

Phenolics in black soybean seed coat (BSSC) are considered to be responsible for the health benefits of black soybean. BSSCs of 60 Chinese varieties were examined for phenolic contents, anthocyanin profiles, and antioxidant activity. Total phenolic and condensed tannin contents ranged from 512.

Cadmium burden and the risk and phenotype of prostate cancer.

Background: Studies on the association between prostate cancer and cadmium exposure have yielded conflicting results. This study explored cadmium burden on the risk and phenotype of prostate cancer in men with no evident environmental exposure.

Methods: Hospital-based 261 prostate cancer cases and 267 controls with benign diseases were recruited from four hospitals in Taiwan.

Meta-analysis on Diagnostic Accuracy of MR Angiography in the Follow-Up of Residual Intracranial Aneurysms Treated with Guglielmi Detachable Coils.

Patients with intracranial aneurysm after coiling with Guglielmi detachable coils (GDC) require imaging follow-up. The accuracy of noninvasive magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) techniques including time-of-flight (TOF) and contrast-enhancement (CE) have been compared with the gold standard digital subtraction angiography (DSA).We systematically reviewed the diagnostic accuracy of these imaging methods in follow-up study of patients with residual intracranial aneurysms after GDC treatment.

Air pollution and hospital admissions for congestive heart failure in a tropical city: Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

This study was undertaken to determine whether there was an association between air pollutant levels and hospital admissions for congestive heart failure (CHF) in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Hospital admissions for CHF and ambient air pollution data for Kaohsiung were obtained for the period 1996-2004. The relative risk of hospital admission was estimated using a case-crossover approach, controlling for weather variables, day of the week, seasonality, and long-term time trends.

Topographical projections to the nucleus prethalamicus from the cerebellum, optic tectum, and telencephalon in holocentrid teleosts.

Fiber connections of the nucleus prethalamicus (PTh) were investigated by biocytin injections into the corpus cerebelli, optic tectum, and telencephalon in holocentrids. The present study revealed the corpus cerebelli projections to the plexiform layer of the contralateral PTh, optic tectum to the marginal and large cell layers of the ipsilateral PTh, and telencephalon to the small cell layer of the ipsilateral PTh. Large cells of the PTh project fibers back to the telencephalon.
