Acute kidney injury is one of the most frequent and clinically important of all postoperative complications in cardiac surgery. It is estimated that almost half of subjects suffer from a deterioration of kidney function after a cardio-pulmonary by-pass. Renal insufficiency impacts upon the outcome in terms of an increase in postoperative morbidity and mortality, and a decrease in quality of life.

The association between gut microbiota and circulating zonulin level, a marker of intestinal permeability, has not been studied yet. The aim of the study is the assessment of plasma zonulin, haptoglobin and proinflammatory cytokines (TNF- α and IL-6) levels in relation to composition of gut microbiota in obese and normal weight subjects. Circulating inflammation markers, such as TNF- α , sTNFR1, sTNFR2, IL-6, zonulin, and haptoglobin levels were measured and semiquantitative analysis of gut microbiota composition was carried out in 50 obese and 30 normal weight subjects without concomitant diseases.

Background: Reduced postprandial secretion of peptide YY (PYY), glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), cholecystokinin, and increased hunger was reported after a single dose of orlistat, an inhibitor of intestinal lipase. As yet, the influence of long-term therapy with orlistat on PYYand GLP-1 release has not been studied. Our study was aimed at assessing the influence of 8-week therapy with orlistat as a component of a weight loss program on pre-prandial circulating PYY and GLP-1 levels.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how different macronutrients affect hunger and satiety in obese vs. normal-weight women by measuring levels of GLP-1, GIP, and insulin after meals.
  • Obese women showed lower GLP-1 and GIP responses after fatty meals, while their insulin response was higher after carbohydrate meals compared to normal-weight women.
  • The findings suggest that satiety in obese individuals is linked to insulin after carb/protein meals, but to GLP-1 after fatty meals; GIP seems less influential in hunger and satiety sensations.

Background: Increased intrarenal resistance index (RI) has been associated with decreased long-term allograft and patient survival in kidney transplant recipients. Taking into account the potential role of endothelial dysfunction, systemic inflammation, arteriosclerotic lesions, and left ventricle remodeling, we performed a cross-sectional study that aimed to evaluate extrarenal factors that may have influence on kidney graft RI in a large cohort of stable kidney transplant recipients.

Methods: One hundred seventy-four kidney transplant recipients were enrolled into the study.

Background: It is generally accepted that kidneys procured from female donors may not perform optimally in male recipients, mostly due to their smaller size and nephron underdosing. Nowadays, conflicting results have been published regarding the detrimental effect of H-Y incompatibility on the long-term prognosis of male kidneys transplanted into female recipient. The aim of this study was an analysis of the impact of donor-recipient gender matching on early function and survival of grafts among a relatively homogenous cohort of kidney recipients.

Venous edema of the limb presents several challenges to clinicians, particularly with regard to its definition, pathophysiology and measurement, as well as those relating to its management. Compression therapy forms the cornerstone of standard care for thromboprophylaxis and management of lower limb venous and lymphatic disorders. Venoactive drugs, of plant or synthetic origin, have also been shown to be effective and safe in the management of venous edema and/or chronic venous disease-related symptoms.

The beneficial effect of regular moderate physical activity on metabolic profile is well documented. Sedentary lifestyle is a risk factor of excessive visceral fat accumulation, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease development. However, intensive training in athletes may be related to unfavorable changes in secretion of adipose tissue hormones and constitute a link in the pathogenesis of hormonal disturbances observed in athletes.
