Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness and safety of sodium valproate (VPA) versus levetiracetam (LEV) in treating severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI) in 84 patients.
  • Both treatment groups showed similar improvements in neurological function and clinical outcomes, with no significant differences in hospital stay or seizure occurrence after 3 months.
  • However, the VPA group had a higher rate of drug-related adverse reactions (40.48%) than the LEV group (21.43%), suggesting that LEV may be a safer option for treating sTBI.

Article Synopsis
  • Soybean crops require molybdenum (Mo) for optimal yield, but the genetic factors affecting Mo levels in soybeans are not well understood.
  • A genome-wide association study identified two genes, GmMOT1.1 and GmMOT1.2, which influence Mo concentration and enhance soybean yield, particularly in acidic soils.
  • These genes improve soybean growth by increasing the synthesis of auxin (a plant hormone), rather than by aiding in nitrogen fixation, highlighting their potential role in breeding strategies.

Seed plants overtook ferns to become the dominant plant group during the late Carboniferous, a period in which the climate became colder and dryer. However, the specific innovations driving the success of seed plants are not clear. Here we report that the appearance of suberin lamellae (SL) contributed to the rise of seed plants.

Cell-cell junctions are essential for multicellular organisms to maintain nutrient homoeostasis. A plant-type tight junction, the Casparian strip (CS)-Casparian strip membrane domain (CSD) that seals the paracellular space between adjacent endodermal cells, has been known for more than one hundred years. However, the molecular basis of this structure remains unknown.

Objective: Recent clinical studies have demonstrated that advanced age and low initial Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score were independent predictors of gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) in patients with primary intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). However, used singly, age and GCS score have their respective shortcomings in predicting the occurrence of GIB. This study aimed to investigate the association between the age-to-initial GCS score ratio (AGR) and the risk of GIB following ICH.

The Zn content in cereal seeds is an important trait for crop production as well as for human health. However, little is known about how Zn is loaded to plant seeds. Here, through a genome-wide association study (GWAS), we identify the Zn-NA (nicotianamine) transporter gene ZmYSL2 that is responsible for loading Zn to maize kernels.

Adventitious roots (ARs) are an important type of plant root and display high phenotypic plasticity in response to different environmental stimuli. It is known that photoreceptors inhibit darkness-induced hypocotyl adventitious root (HAR) formation by directly stabilizing Aux/IAA proteins. In this study, we further report that phytochrome-interacting factors (PIFs) plays a central role in HAR initiation by simultaneously inducing the expression of genes involved in auxin biosynthesis, auxin transport and the transcriptional control of root primordium initiation.

Accumulation of iron in seeds is essential for both plant reproduction and human nutrition. Transport of iron to seeds requires the chelator nicotianamine (NA) to prevent its precipitation in the plant vascular tissues. However, how NA is transported to the apoplast for forming metal-NA complexes remains unknown.

Background: Although coagulopathy have been proved to be a contributor to a poor outcome of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH), the risk factors for triggering coagulation abnormalities have not been studied after aneurysm clipping.

Methods: We investigated risk factors of coagulopathy and analyzed the relationship between acute coagulopathy and outcome after aneurysm clipping. The clinical data of 137 patients with ruptured CA admitted to our institution was collected and retrospectively reviewed.
