Background: Neonatal appendicitis is a rare but critical condition that presents diagnostic challenges due to its nonspecific symptoms and clinical manifestations. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for reducing the high mortality rates associated with this condition. Abdominal ultrasonography plays a pivotal role in identifying characteristic signs of appendicitis in neonates.

Article Synopsis
  • Managing refractory esophageal strictures (RES) after esophageal atresia (EA) repair is challenging, and the efficacy of endoscopic balloon dilation (EBD) for these cases has not been well-documented.
  • A study reviewing 87 EA patients treated with EBD found that 40.2% experienced recurrence of strictures, but 81.6% achieved long-term success after fewer than 20 dilations.
  • Key risk factors linked to poor outcomes included gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), long-gap esophageal atresia (LGEA), the eccentric shape of the stricture, and longer stricture length, while LGEA was also associated with a higher recurrence rate.

Purpose: This study aimed to compare the differences in postoperative complications and long-term bowel function outcomes between patients with rectosigmoid Hirschsprung disease (HD) who underwent transanal endorectal pull-through (TEPT) beyond infancy (age> 1 year of age) and those during infancy (≤ 1 year of age).

Methods: All patients with rectosigmoid HD at Beijing Children's Hospital between January 2011 and December 2020 were analyzed retrospectively. They were divided into two groups based on age at TEPT: group A was defined as patients who performed TEPT beyond infancy (age>1 year of age), and group B as patients who performed TEPT during infancy (age ≤ 1 year of age).

Cholestatic liver diseases (CLD) are characterized by impaired normal bile flow, culminating in excessive accumulation of toxic bile acids. The majority of patients with CLD ultimately progress to liver cirrhosis and hepatic failure, necessitating liver transplantation due to the lack of effective treatment. Recent investigations have underscored the pivotal role of the gut microbiota-bile acid axis in the progression of hepatic fibrosis via various pathways.

To compare the clinical outcomes between total transanal endorectal pull-through (TTEPT) and laparoscopic-assisted transanal endorectal pull-through (LTEPT) in children with rectosigmoid Hirschsprung's disease. A retrospective study was conducted to compare patients with rectosigmoid Hirschsprung's disease who underwent TTEPT or LTEPT at Beijing Children's Hospital between January 2016 and June 2021. Clinical details were collected from medical records.

Objective: To investigate the potential association between preterm birth and infantile appendicitis.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective, multicenter, matched case-control study. This study included consecutive patients <1 year of age with surgery- or autopsy-confirmed appendicitis, admitted between December 2007 and May 2023.

Purpose: To investigate the relationship of IgE-mediated allergy and complicated appendicitis (CA) and overall prognosis.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed a consecutive series of patients with acute appendicitis (AA) who received appendectomy at Beijing Children's Hospital between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2020. Patients were classified into two groups, with or without IgE-mediated allergies.

Background: Few studies have analyzed the cyst characteristics and complications of mesenteric lymphatic malformations (ML). This study aimed to compare ML's cyst characteristics and preoperative complications at different locations and suggest a modified ML classification for patients requiring surgery.

Methods: In total, 157 ML patients underwent surgery at Beijing Children's Hospital between January 2010 and December 2021.

Objective: To compare the differences in clinical features, postoperative complications, and long-term bowel function outcomes of ultrashort-segment Hirschsprung disease (USHD) and short-segment Hirschsprung disease (SHD).

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted to compare patients with USHD or SHD who underwent transanal endorectal pull-through (TEPT) at Beijing Children's Hospital between January 2014 and June 2021. Clinical details were collected from medical records.

Background: Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis (HAEC), one of the most significant causes of morbidity and mortality for patients with Hirschsprung disease (HSCR), can occur before and after radical surgery. This study aims to identify the risk factors for HAEC before and after Soave.  METHODS: A retrospective study of 145 patients with HSCR treated by transanal or combination with laparoscopic or laparotomy Soave procedure between January 2011 and June 2021 was performed.

Background: Preoperative complications of mesenteric lymphatic malformations (ML) in children are various and complex. We aim to analyze the incidences and risk factors of three major preoperative complications (hemorrhage of the cyst, infection of the cyst and intestinal volvulus) in ML patients, and explore their influence on the outcomes.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study enrolled ML patients undergoing surgery at Beijing Children's Hospital between June 2016 and June 2022 and classified them according to different preoperative complications, preoperative hemorrhage or infection, and preoperative intestinal volvulus.
