Background: Pediatric epilepsy significantly affects cognitive and developmental outcomes, with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) posing a major challenge. While pharmacological and surgical interventions remain standard treatments, they often fail in refractory cases. Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation (NIBS), including Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), has emerged as a promising therapeutic alternative.

Dravet syndrome is a rare form of epilepsy starting from infancy that can plaque the affected individuals all though his/her life with repeated seizures, and this condition is currently without a complete cure. So prenatal screening of molecular markers of this condition is urgently needed to help couples conceiving new lives to steer clear of this potential danger. And such an assay should ideally be of low cost and could be completed in a point-of-care fashion.

Background: Clinical practicum is crucial for strengthening nursing students' clinical competence. However, nursing students often experience considerable stress during clinical practicum, and so they employ coping strategies to alleviate it. There is almost no empirical evidence on the change trajectory of perceived stress, coping strategies, and clinical competence among nursing students during a one-year clinical practicum.

Objective: To investigate the clinical variables that might predict the outcome of developmental and epileptic encephalopathy (DEE) after vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) therapy and identify the risk factors for poor long-term outcome.

Patients And Methods: We retrospectively studied 32 consecutive children with drug-resistant DEE who had undergone VNS surgery from April 2019 to July 2021, which were not suitable for corpus callosotomy. In spite of combining valproic acid, levetiracetam, lamotrigine, topiramate, etc.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the impact of acupressure on the severity of restless legs syndrome (RLS) and sleep quality in hemodialysis patients.
  • Patients participated in a crossover trial where they received acupressure or were observed without treatment over two months, with the intervention involving specific acupoints on the lower limbs during dialysis sessions.
  • Results showed that while acupressure significantly decreased RLS severity, it did not lead to improvements in overall sleep quality as measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index.

Article Synopsis
  • Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is linked to higher cardiovascular risks and mortality in hemodialysis (HD) patients, prompting a study in Taiwan to identify its risk factors.
  • A case-control study compared 59 HD patients with RLS to 353 without it, gathering data through interviews and medical records, and analyzed it using statistical methods.
  • Findings revealed that having dialysis for over 5 years and low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) significantly increased the risk of developing RLS among HD patients.

Corrosive injury results from the intake of corrosive-acid-based chemicals. However, this phenomenon is limited to a small number of cases and cannot be extrapolated to the epidemiology of corrosive injuries in actual situations. This study focuses on the annual incidence of corrosive injury and its connection to gender, risk factors, and in-hospital mortality.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined how acupressure affects fatigue in lung cancer patients going through chemotherapy.
  • Participants (57) were divided into three groups: acupressure with essential oils, acupressure only, and a sham acupressure group.
  • Results showed that those receiving acupressure (with or without oils) reported less fatigue and better sleep quality compared to the sham group, suggesting potential benefits of acupressure in managing cancer-related fatigue.
  • Further research is recommended to confirm these findings.

B cell activating factor (BAFF), belonging to the TNF (tumor necrosis factor) family, is critical for B cell survival and maturation. In the present study, a quail BAFF cDNA, named qBAFF, was amplified from quail spleen by RT-PCR and RACE (rapid amplification of cDNA ends) strategies. The open reading frame (ORF) of qBAFF cDNA encodes a protein consisting of 288-amino acid.
