Article Synopsis
  • Postoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks are serious complications that can occur after endoscopic skull base surgery, prompting the need for effective treatment strategies.
  • This study examines a multilayered membrane reconstruction method used in 15 patients to address high-flow intraoperative CSF leaks during expanded endoscopic endonasal tumor resections from January 2019 to June 2023.
  • The results showed no cases of postoperative CSF leakage or related complications after a median follow-up of 13 months, suggesting this technique may be a reliable option for watertight closure and indicating a need for further research.

Article Synopsis
  • Infertility affects about 15% of women but its impact on stroke mortality is not well understood; this study uses data from the PLCO cancer screening trial to explore this relationship.
  • An analysis of 75,778 women aged 55-74 revealed that those with infertility had a 21% higher risk of stroke mortality compared to those without infertility, even after adjusting for various health and demographic factors.
  • The study concluded that infertility is linked to an increased risk of stroke mortality in women, suggesting the need for further research to understand the mechanisms behind this association.

Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is the most common type of lung cancer and is characterized by a high death rate and a poor prospect for survival. Anoikis, which is a kind of programmed cell apoptosis, is an important factor in the advancement of tumors. Nonetheless, the function of anoikis-related lncRNAs (ARLRs) in LUAD is still not well understood.

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is an important but frequently overlooked risk factor for hypertension (HTN). The prevalence of hypertension is high in patients with OSA, but the differences in clinical symptoms and comorbidities between patients with OSA with hypertension and those with normal blood pressure have not been fully defined.

Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed OSA patients diagnosed for the first time in Lihuili Hospital Affiliated to Ningbo University from 2016 to 2020.

Glioma-associated macrophages (GAMs) are pivotal chains in the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME). GAMs mostly display M2-like phenotypes with anti-inflammatory features related to the malignancy and progression of cancers. Extracellular vesicles derived from immunosuppressive GAMs (M2-EVs), the essential components of the TIME, greatly impact the malignant behavior of GBM cells.

Patients with Cushing's disease (CD) who underwent endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery (ETS) with a layered peel strategy at our center were retrospectively analyzed. Records on patients' basic characteristics, preoperative and early postoperative evaluations, perioperative complications, and follow-up were collected. A total of 12 unselected, consecutive patients with CD were identified.

Multi-omics expression datasets obtained from multiple public databases were used to elucidate the biological function of TK1 and its effects on clinical outcomes. The Kaplan-Meier curve, a predictive nomogram mode, and the time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were established to assess the role of TK1 expression in glioma prognosis. TK1 was overexpressed in glioma compared with normal samples, and patients with elevated expression of TK1 had poor overall survival.

Background: The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in older people (aged over 65 years) is high. However, OSA in older populations has not received sufficient attention. This study examined the clinical phenotypic characteristics of older patients with newly diagnosed OSA.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is related to repeated upper airway collapse, intermittent hypoxia, and intestinal barrier dysfunction. The resulting damage to the intestinal barrier may affect or be affected by the intestinal microbiota. A prospective case-control was used, including 48 subjects from Sleep Medicine Center of Nanfang Hospital.

Background: The association between glioma risk and body mass index (BMI) remains obscure.

Methods: This study aimed to assess the association between glioma risk and BMI in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to calculate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).

Numerous studies have elucidated the neuroprotective effect of 6-gingerol in central nervous system diseases. However, the potential role and mechanism of 6-gingerol on early brain injury (EBI) after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) remains poorly understood. Here, we report that 6-gingerol exerts a neuroprotective effect on SAH-induced EBI through the GBP2/PI3K/AKT pathway.

Background: Epidemiological evidence that glioma has a slight male predominance implies that factors associated with sex hormones may play a role in the development of glioma. The association between oral contraceptive (OC) use and glioma risk remains controversial.

Method: In the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial of 70,516 women in the USA, Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were adopted to calculate the crude and adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).

Background: Receptor for Advanced Glycation End-products (RAGE) is an oncogene abnormally expressed in various cancers. However, the clinical value of RAGE and the biological role of RAGE in lung cancer have not been fully investigated.

Methods: We compared the RAGE expression using several public databases.

With the rapid development of detection methods, next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology as a new technology, some novel epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene fusions comprising the linked to various fusion partners, most commonly , are detected in the non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We described a case of an unreported kinesin family member 5B ()- in NSCLC and the efficacy of EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) to this specific fusion. Considering this rare fusion and remarkable response to EGFR-TKI, we should realize the importance of these rare fusions, the advances in diagnostic techniques and personalized care for lung cancer patients.

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is often associated with multisystem damage. The gut is a pivotal organ that initiates the pathophysiological processes of multisystem diseases. Intermittent hypoxia resulting from OSA may impair the intestinal barrier prior to the induction of systemic inflammation.
