Anaphylaxis: A 2023 practice parameter update.

This practice parameter update focuses on 7 areas in which there are new evidence and new recommendations. Diagnostic criteria for anaphylaxis have been revised, and patterns of anaphylaxis are defined. Measurement of serum tryptase is important for diagnosis of anaphylaxis and to identify underlying mast cell disorders.

Optimization of artificial membrane feeding system for lone star ticks, Amblyomma americanum (Acari: Ixodidae), and experimental infection with Rickettsia amblyommatis (Rickettsiales: Rickettsiaceae).

With the introduction of siliconized artificial membranes, various artificial feeding systems (AFS) for hard ticks (Ixodidae) have been developed over the last decades. Most AFS utilize similar core components but employ diverse approaches, materials, and experimental conditions. Published work describes different combinations of the core components without experimental optimizations for the artificial feeding of different tick species.

NaMgPS and RbMgPSCl: two Mg-based thiophosphates with ultrawide bandgaps resulting from [MgS] and [MgSCl] octahedra.

Designing wide-bandgap chalcogenides is one of the most important ways of obtaining high-performance infrared (IR) functional materials. In this work, two Mg-based metal thiophosphates, namely NaMgPS (NMPS) and RbMgPSCl (RMPSC), were successfully obtained by introducing [MgS] and [MgSCl] octahedra into thiophosphates. In addition, their crystal structures were determined, a first for Mg-containing [PS]-based thiophosphates to the best of our knowledge.

Inactivated vaccines reduce the risk of liver function abnormality in NAFLD patients with COVID-19: a multi-center retrospective study.

Background: Abnormal liver function was frequently observed in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients infected with SARS-CoV-2. Our aim was to explore the effect of SARS-CoV-2 inactivated vaccines on liver function abnormality among NAFLD patients with COVID-19.

Methods: The multi-center retrospective cohort included 517 NAFLD patients with COVID-19 from 1 April to 30 June 2022.

Understanding the Impact of Enhanced Recovery Programs on Social Vulnerability, Race, and Colorectal Surgery Outcomes.

Background: Increasing social vulnerability, measured by the Social Vulnerability Index, has been associated with worse surgical outcomes. However, less is known about the impact of social vulnerability on patients who underwent colorectal surgery under enhanced recovery programs.

Objective: We hypothesized that increasing social vulnerability is associated with worse outcomes before enhanced recovery implementation, but that after implementation, disparities in outcomes would be reduced.

Genome- and transcriptome-wide identification of trehalose-6-phosphate phosphatases (TPP) gene family and their expression patterns under abiotic stress and exogenous trehalose in soybean.

Background: Trehalose-6-phosphate phosphatase (TPP) is an essential enzyme catalyzing trehalose synthesis, an important regulatory factor for plant development and stress response in higher plants. However, the TPP gene family in soybean has not been reported.

Results: A comprehensive analysis of the TPP gene family identified 18 GmTPPs classified into eight groups based on the phylogenetic relationships and the conservation of protein in six monocot and eudicot plants.

Causes of death among people with myelomeningocele: A multi-institutional 47-year retrospective study.

Purpose: This study aimed to analyze organ system-based causes and non-organ system-based mechanisms of death (COD, MOD) in people with myelomeningocele (MMC), comparing urological to other COD.

Methods: A retrospective review was performed of 16 institutions in Canada/United States of non-random convenience sample of people with MMC (born > = 1972) using non-parametric statistics.

Results: Of 293 deaths (89% shunted hydrocephalus), 12% occurred in infancy, 35% in childhood, and 53% in adulthood (documented COD: 74%).

Comparison of endovascular therapies for chronic limb-threatening ischemia and claudication.

Objective: Analysis of regional data from the Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) suggested improved survival for patients undergoing stent placement compared with balloon angioplasty and atherectomy. Using national data from the VQI linked to Medicare claims data through the Vascular Implant Surveillance and Interventional Outcomes Network program, this study aimed to compare the rates of mortality, reintervention, and amputation after endovascular interventions (atherectomy, stenting, and balloon angioplasty) for two separate cohorts: patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) and patients with claudication.

Methods: This was a secondary data analysis of Society for Vascular Surgery National VQI data linked to Medicare claims, between October 2016 and December 2019.

Viral host adaptation plays an important role in inter-species transmission of coronaviruses and influenza viruses. Multiple human-adaptive mutations have been identified in influenza viruses but not so far in MERS-CoV that circulates widely in dromedary camels in the Arabian Peninsula leading to zoonotic transmission. Here, we analyzed clade B MERS-CoV sequences and identified an amino acid substitution L232F in nsp6 that repeatedly occurs in human MERS-CoV.

The Social and Home Environment: Impacts of Determinants of Health on Atopic Dermatitis, Pathways Toward Solutions, and Unique Considerations for Rural and Remote North American Indigenous Populations.

Disparities in environmental and social determinants of health (DOH) are associated with morbidity in atopic dermatitis (AD). The socioecological model (SEM) is a framework that can be applied to better understand how such DOH impacts patients with AD. We include a case scenario of a remote Indigenous patient reflective of real-world situations of living with AD and examine relevant impact, gaps in knowledge, and further research needs.

The association between Helicobacter pylori and gastrointestinal disorders during pregnancy: A Multicenter retrospective study.

Background: Some gastrointestinal disorders may be associated with Helicobacter pylori infection, which not only affect maternal health, but may also lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes. We aim to explore the association between H. pylori and gastrointestinal disorders in pregnant women.

Herein, we identify that endometrial lactate production plays a critical role in establishing local histone lactylation, a newly identified histone modification, and is important for ensuring normal decidualization.

A New Metal-Free Molecular Perovskite-Related Single Crystal with Quantum Wire Structure for High-Performance X-Ray Detection.

The family of metal-free molecular perovskites, an emerging novel class of eco-friendly semiconductor, welcomes a new member with a unique 1D hexagonal perovskite structure. Lowering dimensionality at molecular level is a facile strategy for crystal structure conversion, optoelectronic property regulation, and device performance optimization. Herein, the study reports the design, synthesis, packing structure, and photophysical properties of the 1D metal-free molecular perovskite-related single crystal, rac-3APD-NHI(rac-3APD= racemic-3-Aminopiperidinium), that features a quantum wire structure formed by infinite chains of face-sharing NHI octahedra, enabling strong quantum confinement with strongly self-trapped excited (STE) states to give efficient warm orange emission with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) as high as ≈41.

Midterm Survival of Low-Risk Patients Treated With Transcatheter Versus Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement: Meta-Analysis of Reconstructed Time-to-Event Data.

Background We performed a meta-analysis of reconstructed time-to-event data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and propensity-score matched (PSM) studies comparing transcatheter versus surgical aortic valve replacement (TAVR versus SAVR) to evaluate midterm outcomes in patients considered low risk for SAVR. Methods and Results Study-level meta-analysis of reconstructed time-to-event data from Kaplan-Meier curves of RCTs and PSM studies published by December 31, 2022 was conducted. Eight studies (3 RCTs, 5 PSM studies) met our eligibility criteria and included 5444 patients; 2639 patients underwent TAVR, and 2805 patients underwent SAVR.

Here we identified that Warburg effect is enhanced in hippocampal neurons during aging.

Tau truncation in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease: a narrative review.

Alzheimer's disease is characterized by two major neuropathological hallmarks-the extracellular β-amyloid plaques and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles consisting of aggregated and hyperphosphorylated Tau protein. Recent studies suggest that dysregulation of the microtubule-associated protein Tau, especially specific proteolysis, could be a driving force for Alzheimer's disease neurodegeneration. Tau physiologically promotes the assembly and stabilization of microtubules, whereas specific truncated fragments are sufficient to induce abnormal hyperphosphorylation and aggregate into toxic oligomers, resulting in them gaining prion-like characteristics.

Endovascular mechanical thrombectomy, combined with a tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA), is efficacious as a standard care for qualifying ischemic stroke patients. However, > 50% of thrombectomy patients still have poor outcomes. Manganese porphyrins, commonly known as mimics of superoxide dismutases, are potent redox-active catalytic compounds that decrease oxidative/nitrosative stress and in turn decrease inflammatory responses, mitigating therefore the secondary injury of the ischemic brain.
