Background: Ghrelin is an appetite hormone that influences the gastrointestinal function and regulates energy metabolism. Growing evidence also suggests that this hormone plays a central role in immune modulation. Each surgical operation is followed by a series of inflammatory and metabolic changes that constitute the stress response.

Mesentery lymphoma in a patient with Crohn's disease: An extremely rare entity.

Introduction: Lymphoma is a rare complication of long-standing Crohn's disease. We report a rare case of a diffuse, B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the mesentery in a patient receiving treatment for Crohn's disease.

Presentation Of Case: A 52 year-old patient presented with abdominal pain, anorexia and postprandial fullness.

Lymph node harvesting in colorectal carcinoma specimens.

Introduction: Adequate lymph node evaluation is an important determinant of prognosis in patients with colorectal cancer. Current guidelines recommend evaluation of at least 12 lymph nodes; however, a significant number of patients fail to meet these criteria.

Aim: To investigate the factors that influence adequate recovery and evaluation of lymph nodes in colorectal cancer.

Introduction: During the past several years, the Ki-67 antigen has gathered great interest in its role as a prognostic marker. Nevertheless, despite the large number of published papers, the role of Ki-67 in clinical practice remains controversial.

The role of sonography in the diagnosis of cystic lesions of the breast.

Introduction: Breast sonography is appropriate in the initial assessment of a women younger than 30 years with a palpable lump and in the adjunctive evaluation of mammographic masses, and palpable abnormalities not seen mammographically.

Material And Methods: A total of 269 patients underwent breast examination with ultrasound due to the presence of bilateral or unilateral palpable lesions. Women under 40 years old were submitted to US examination only while patients older than 40 years underwent US breast assessment and conventional mammography.

Recurrent erythema multiforme after alcohol ingestion in a patient receiving ciprofloxacin: a case report.

The incidence of cutaneous adverse reactions to quinolones is low; moreover their development in patients with concomitant alcohol consumption is a phenomenon that has been scarcely reported. We present a case of 46-year-old male who developed erythema multiforme after ingestion of alcohol, while being treated with ciprofloxacin. The lesion was self-limiting and abstinence from alcohol permitted the completion of the course of therapy without any other adverse reaction.

Desmoid tumor of the supraclavicular region: a case report.

Desmoid tumors are rare, benign fibroblastic tumors that are locally infiltrative and can cause extensive morbidity by destruction of adjacent vital structures. Due to the rarity of these tumors, evidence regarding optimal treatment protocols is drawn from case reports and single-arm series with small patient numbers. We report a case of a patient with a desmoid tumor of the left supraclavicular region that was diagnosed and treated in our department and a review of the current literature.

Management of incidental left-sided gallbladder.

A left-sided gallbladder is a gallbladder located on the left side of the round ligament. It constitutes an uncommon anatomic abnormality. We report on a case of left-sided gallbladder discovered incidentally during laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and we discuss the different forms of this anatomic anomaly and its surgical relevance.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors of the rectum: report of five cases.

We report on five patients (three males and two females), with a median age of 66.2 years (range, 58-73 years) who were admitted in our department from April 1998 until January 2004 with the diagnosis of rectal gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). Their main symptoms were rectal bleeding, constipation and abdominal discomfort.

Successful use of recombinant activated factor VII for postoperative associated haemorrhage: a case report.

Background: Coagulopathy is a major contributing factor to bleeding related mortality even after achieving adequate surgical control of the haemorrhage in trauma and surgical patients.

Case Presentation: A 65 years old Greek man was admitted in our ICU with critical haemorrhage following renal biopsy. Despite surgical exploration the patient continued to bleed resulting in a vicious cycle of transfusion, coagulopathy and re-bleeding.

A case of polymyositis associated with papillary thyroid cancer: a case report.

Differentiated thyroid cancer is rarely associated with paraneoplastic events. Polymyositis, an autoimmune inflammatory myopathy, can be manifested as a paraneoplastic syndrome (PS). We report a case of a young woman who developed progressive proximal muscle weakness one and a half year after a total thyroidectomy for papillary thyroid cancer.

Collision tumour of the stomach with a cancer to cancer metastasis: a case report.

Introduction: Coexistence of a primary gastric lymphoma and a gastric adenocarcinoma is a rare event. The diagnosis is suspected after the pathologic examination of the endoscopic biopsies and definitely documented with the examination of the surgical specimen.

Case Presentation: We are presenting a rare case of a 77-year-old Greek man with epigastric pain of one and a half month duration, nausea, anorexia and weight loss.
