Composite polymer membranes were obtained using the so-called dry phase inversion and were used for desalination of diluted saline water solutions by pervaporation (PV) method. The tests used a two-layer backing, porous, ultrafiltration commercial membrane (PS20), which consisted of a supporting polyester layer and an active polysulfone layer. The active layer of PV membranes was obtained in an aqueous environment, in the presence of a surfactant, by cross-linking a 5 wt.

Article Synopsis
  • Delays in breast cancer detection and treatment can lead to higher mortality rates, making organized breast cancer screenings (OBCS) crucial, but global participation has been low, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • A study analyzed 6,282 women in France invited to OBCS in 2020, categorizing their responses based on when they underwent mammography after their invitation: promptly, late, or not at all.
  • The results showed that younger women and those with less frequent gynecological and colorectal cancer screenings were less likely to attend, while women with higher education and those from disadvantaged areas tended to attend late.

Unlabelled: Impairment of cognitive functions is the primary reason for admission to long-term care units, with executive functions playing a pivotal role in dependency and behavioral issues. These functions pose significant challenges to nursing staff in providing care. However, the assessment of executive functions in elderly individuals residing in nursing homes often relies on tests that are both time-consuming and difficult for this demographic.

The investigation of the effects of prenatal cocaine exposure (PCE) on offspring has been inconsistent, with few studies investigating biological outcomes in humans. We profiled genome-wide DNA methylation (DNAm) of umbilical cord blood (UCB) from newborns with (n = 35) and without (n = 47) PCE. We used DNAm data to (1) assess pediatric epigenetic clocks at birth and (2) to estimate epigenetic scores (ES) for lifetime disorders.

Plastics have recently become an indispensable part of everyone's daily life due to their versatility, durability, light weight, and low production costs. The increasing production and use of plastics poses great environmental problems due to their incomplete utilization, a very long period of biodegradation, and a negative impact on living organisms. Decomposing plastics lead to the formation of microplastics, which accumulate in the environment and living organisms, becoming part of the food chain.

Literature reviews have described the applications of silver, copper, and zinc ions and metallic particles of Cu, Ti, and Zn oxides, which have been found to be useful antimicrobial reagents for the biofunctionalization of various materials and their surfaces. For this purpose, compositions of water dispersions containing emulsions of synthetic copolymers based on acrylic and vinyl monomers, polysaccharides (hydroxyethyl cellulose and starch), and various additives with wetting and stabilizing properties were used. Many stable water dispersions of different chemical compositions containing bioactive chemical compounds (copper silicate hydrate, titanium dioxide, and zinc oxide (and other auxiliary substances)) were developed.

Introduction: Few older people participate in medical research, especially in the nursing home setting. The lack of evidence in this population may limit our ability to provide evidence-based treatments. This can partly be explained by difficulties in obtaining a satisfactory adherence to research in this population, especially when the practice of a physical activity is needed.
