Inflammation-attenuating effect of carbon dioxide versus room-air environment in a rat laparotomy model.

Background: The mechanism by which laparoscopic operations induce lower post-operative inflammatory response compared to open surgery was investigated with regard to the effect of the type of gas environment.

Methods: Rats were subjected to midline laparotomy at either CO (group CO) or room-air environment (group Air) or to anesthesia only (group Control) under atmospheric pressure conditions. At various timepoints after surgery (1, 3, 6, 24, or 48 h), the expression of inflammation biomarkers interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα), and nuclear factor-κΒ (NFκΒ) were assessed immunohistochemically in tissue samples excised from the liver, intestine, and kidneys, accompanied by histopathologic analysis, and their levels were measured by ELISA in blood samples.

Prognostic value of COL6A3 in pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

Backgrounds/aims: Pancreatic cancer is one of the most fatal human malignancies with poor prognosis, despite advances in therapy. Here, we evaluated the potential role of collagen type VI α3 chain (COL6A3) as a non-invasive biomarker for pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

Methods: In this study, we investigated immunohistochemically the expression of COL6A3 in 30 patients with resectable pancreatic adenocarcinoma by immunohistochemistry in a tissue sample of the cancer and a tissue sample of normal pancreas for each patient.

Direct inguinal hernia containing bladder carcinoma: A case report and review of the literature.

Introduction: Inguinal hernia containing bladder carcinoma is a very rare occurrence.

Presentation Of Case: We report a case of a male patient who presented with a left groin hernia containing an irregular mass. The hernia was repaired without the use of mesh and a partial cystectomy was done.

Role of extended lymphadenectomy in the treatment of pancreatic head adenocarcinoma: review and meta-analysis.

Background: Extended lymph node dissection has been established as the method of choice in the treatment of many digestive malignancies, but its role in the treatment of adenocarcinoma of the pancreas remains controversial.

Objectives: The goal is to evaluate the role of extended lymph node dissection in pancreatic head adenocarcinoma and to review how it affects survival, morbidity, mortality and post-operative quality of life.

Methods: A computerized search was made of the Medline database from January 1973 to October 2012.
