The present work offers a comprehensive overview of methods related to condition assessment of bridges through Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) procedures, with a particular interest on aspects of seismic assessment. Established techniques pertaining to different levels of the SHM hierarchy, reflecting increasing detail and complexity, are first outlined. A significant portion of this review work is then devoted to the overview of computational intelligence schemes across various aspects of bridge condition assessment, including sensor placement and health tracking.

Article Synopsis
  • Temozolomide (TMZ) is the main treatment for glioblastoma (GBM), but resistance to the drug limits its effectiveness.
  • A study identifies pantothenate kinase 4 (PANK4) as a key factor in TMZ resistance, confirmed through various tests including cell models and patient samples.
  • PANK4 levels increase during TMZ treatment and are linked to poorer patient outcomes; its depletion also disrupts detoxification processes, leading to higher levels of harmful reactive oxygen species and increased cell death during treatment.

Liver transplantation is the gold-standard therapy for acute hepatic failure (AHF) with limitations related to organ shortage and life-long immunosuppressive therapy. Cell therapy emerges as a promising alternative to transplantation. We have previously shown that IL-10 and Annexin-A1 released by amniotic fluid human mesenchymal stromal cells (AF-MSCs) and their hepatocyte progenitor-like (HPL) or hepatocyte-like (HPL) cells induce liver repair and downregulate systemic inflammation in a CCl-AHF mouse model.

Liver dysfunctions are classified into acute and chronic diseases, which comprise a heterogeneous group of pathological features and a high mortality rate. Liver transplantation remains the gold-standard therapy for most liver diseases, with concomitant limitations related to donor organ shortage and lifelong immunosuppressive therapy. A concept in liver therapy intends to overcome these limitations based on the secreted extracellular vesicles (EVs; microvesicles and exosomes) by mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs).

The development and application of a low-cost instrumentation system for seismic hazard assessment in urban areas are described in the present study. The system comprises a number of autonomous triaxial accelerographs, designed and manufactured in house and together with dedicated software for device configuration, data collection and further postprocessing. The main objective is to produce a detailed view of strong motion variability in urban areas, for at least light intensity strong motion events.
