The concept of self-care is a foundational construct of individual health and wellness. Facilitated self-care is the next logical step in society's uptake of technology for previously high-touch clinical activities, such as patient education and frequent biometric data tracking. This retrospective study aimed to assess whether participation in a digital interactive care plan correlated with an increase in participants' perceived self-efficacy as measured by a change in the Shortened Perceived Medical Condition Self-management Scale score from baseline to end-of-care plan.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated an app-based interactive care plan (ICP) for breast cancer survivors to improve patient engagement and symptom management.
  • Despite initial feasibility, only a limited percentage of tasks were completed, with significant decreases over time.
  • The findings suggest that while the ICP is manageable for providers, strategies are needed to boost patient engagement for broader use.

Biomedical literature contains unstructured, rich information regarding proteins, ligands, diseases as well as biological pathways in which they are involved. Systematically analyzing such textual corpus has the potential for biomedical discovery of new protein-protein interactions and hidden drug indications. For this purpose, we have investigated a methodology that is based on a well-established text mining tool, Word2Vec, for the analysis of PubMed full text articles to derive word embeddings, and the use of a simple semantic similarity comparison either by itself or in conjunction with k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN) technique for the prediction of new relationships.

We report a case of an unusually prominent persistent notochordal canal involving the T12-L5 vertebrae. This rare anatomic variation was discovered as an incidental finding in a patient with lymphoma undergoing MR imaging for evaluation of back pain. MR images showed a vertically oriented canal contiguous with the intervertebral disks traversing the anterior aspect of each affected vertebral body.

We report a case of an ectopic, extraspinal meningioma that appeared as a midline interscapular mass in a 13-year-old girl. The tumor involved the T-2 and T-3 spinous processes, but was dorsal to the lamina and was entirely extrinsic to the spinal canal. Large amounts of tumoral calcification and reactive hyperostosis were present, radiologically mimicking an osteogenic sarcoma.

We report an unusual case of biopsy-proven combined leptomeningeal and calvarial sarcoidosis, as seen on CT and MRI. A solitary large thick plaque was present in the left hemisphere, with overlying bony infiltration and erosion and associated abundant vasogenic edema in the brain. The lytic lesion was visible on Scout digital radiography for CT slice positioning.

This study examined some psychometric properties of the Test of Basic Auditory Capabilities (TBAC). Two experiments are described that evaluate the psychometric functions and the test-retest reliability of the tests comprising the TBAC. The psychometric functions were established for young listeners with normal hearing and the test-retest reliability was evaluated both with young listeners with normal hearing and elderly listeners with hearing impairment.

This study examined the performance of four subject groups on several temporally based measures of auditory processing and several measures of speech identification. The four subjects groups were (a) young normal-hearing adults; (b)-hearing-impaired elderly subjects ranging in age from 65 to 75 years; (c) hearing-impaired elderly adults ranging in age from 76 to 86 years; and (d) young normal-hearing listeners with hearing loss simulated with a spectrally shaped masking noise adjusted to match the actual hearing loss of the two elderly groups. In addition to between-group analyses of performance on the auditory processing and speech identification tasks, correlational and regression analyses within the two groups of elderly hearing-impaired listeners were performed.

TrnH and the intergenic region between trnH and psbA of the chloroplast genomes of alfalfa (Medicago sativa), Fabaceae, and petunia (Petunia hybrida), Solanaceae, were sequenced and compared to published sequences of that region from other members of those families. A striking feature of these comparisons is the occurrence of insertions/deletions between short, nearly perfect AT-rich direct repeats. The directionality of these mutations in the petunia, tobacco and Nicotiana debneyi lineages within the Solanaceae cannot be discerned.

Changes in quality of life for patients who require transplantation or permanent artificial organ support begin with the onset of serious organ dysfunction. These changes, which initially are almost universally negative, greatly affect close family members as well as the patient. To the extent that alternate therapies are available, transplantation appears preferable to chronic artificial organ support in allowing the patient to return to work, to school, or to similar self-selected activities.

A Working Group appointed by the Director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHBLI) has reviewed the current status of mechanical circulatory support systems (MCSS), and has examined the potential need for such devices, their cost, and certain societal and ethical issues related to their use. The media have reported the limited clinical investigative use of pneumatically energized total artificial hearts (which actually replace the patient's heart) and left ventricular assist devices (which support or replace the function of the left ventricle by pumping blood from the left heart to the aorta with the patient's heart in place). However, electrically energized systems, which will allow full implantation, permit relatively normal everyday activity, and involve battery exchange or recharge two or three times a day, are currently approaching long-term validation in animals prior to clinical testing.
